The Medical Researcher, Department of Surgery will be a PhD level investigator within the Department of Surgery focusing on optimizing the patient experience, integrating research projects, and contributing to innovative educational strategies.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Medical Researcher, Department of Surgery at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Responsible for optimizing Patient Experience: Implement and administer research initiatives aimed at enhancing the overall patient experience in medical and surgical contexts - at Hackensack Meridian Health and beyond.

  • Integrative Research Projects: Contribute to and lead integrative research projects that bridge the gap between medical sciences and surgical education, promoting a holistic understanding.

  • Surgical Education Research: Conduct and oversee research activities related to surgical education at both undergraduate and graduate medical education levels, engaging interested medical students in research and related publication activities.

  • Cultivate Research Opportunities: Develop, catalog, and promote opportunities for undergraduate medical student research.

  • Faculty Development: Develop and implement programs to enhance the professional growth of physician faculty members, focusing on their teaching and mentoring capabilities, and promoting excellence through mentorship.

  • Technical Skill Acquisition: Collaborate with surgical faculty to design and implement strategies for improving technical skill acquisition among medical students, residents, and fellows.

  • Curriculum and Instructional Design: Design and deliver curricula in surgical specialties through effective instructional design methods, ensuring a comprehensive and dynamic learning environment.

  • Surgical Equity: Facilitate research into the equitable delivery and outcomes of surgical care.

  • General Surgery Teaching and Learning: Play a key role in advancing the teaching and learning methodologies within the realm of general surgery, incorporating evidence-based practices.

  • Work on Education Improvement and Innovation by working towards the overarching goal of improving and innovating education in the medical and surgical fields, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Implement and refine assessment methods to evaluate cognition and learning outcomes, providing valuable insights for ongoing educational enhancements.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Adhere to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required :

  • PhD in Social Sciences,Outcomes, Education OR other related field

  • Expertise in basic data analysis.

  • Experience in manuscript and related document preparation.

  • Design, administration, and/or execution of clinical research.

  • Familiar with various aspects of biomedical research.

  • Interest in clinical care delivery and patient experience.

  • Evidence of teaching in an undergraduate medical education and/or other health science setting.

  • Ability to perform research with investigators of various levels of experience and sophistication

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficient computer skills.

  • Collaborative and forward-thinking individual committed to advancing medical education through research, innovation, and a comprehensive understanding of both medical sciences and surgical education.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred :

  • Evidence of research output including publications and/or presentations at national/international forums.

  • A minimum of 3 years post graduate work experience
