City of Hattiesburg Code Enforcement Officer - PT (Urban Development) in Hattiesburg, Mississippi
Position: Code Enforcement Officer (Part-time) Department: Urban Development Division: Land Code
Rate of Pay: $15.00 / hour
Nature of Work: Under general supervision, the Part-Time Code Enforcement Officer performs technical duties to support the City of Hattiesburg's Code Enforcement Division, with focus given to the North Main Historic Neighborhood District and/or other assignments in relation to Historic Preservation Districts. Reporting directly to the Division Manager, the officer will work collaboratively with the Assistant Division Manager to address code enforcement issues and ensuring compliance with the Historic Preservation Guidelines for the City of Hattiesburg.
Examples of Work: • Receive and respond to citizen complaints and reports of potential violations of City zoning, land use, and historic preservation codes within the North Main Historic Neighborhood District. • Conduct field investigations and property inspections to identify and address code violations; engage directly with property owners and tenants to facilitate compliance. • Issue warning notices, notices of violation, and corrective notices; document violations with detailed records and follow up to ensure resolution. • Maintain accurate case files using Microsoft Office, Energov, and GIS systems, including photographs, maps, and written documentation. • Prepare evidence for legal actions and represent the City in Environmental Court or administrative hearings as necessary. • Serve as an informational resource for property owners, residents, and businesses, educating stakeholders about the unique requirement of the historic district. • Collaborate with the Assistant Division Manager to align enforcement strategies with district priorities and enhance compliance efforts. • Perform related duties as assigned, with potential for reassignment to other areas as the City's needs change in future years.
Qualifications: • Completion of college-level coursework or equivalent training in criminal justice, public administration, historic preservation, or a related field, or a high school diploma supplemented by specialized training. • At least one year of work experience involving a high level of public contact, including roles in enforcement, inspection, investigation, or customer service. Experience with historic preservation or zoning enforcement is highly desirable. • Possession of a valid driver's license.
Additional Requirements: The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, an appreciation for and commitment to historic preservation, and the ability to balance enforcement with education and collaboration. Familiarity with the North Main Historic Neighborhood District's codes and challenges is preferred.
