Job Description

The Sanitation Equipment Operator will operate one or more types of trucks and assist in the collection of garbage to ensure that the streets and alleyways are clean and free of trash. Responsible for the refuse collection of an assigned route.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Operate a mechanical, front, rear, or side packer truck used for collecting, packing, and disposing of solid waste and or recyclable materials on a designated route or area, safely and properly.

  • Collect and dispose of yard waste and large, bulky items when assigned to hand pick up.

  • Travel to and from the landfill in dispose of waste materials.

  • Assist in litter pickup and similar programs when required.

  • Maintain, inspect vehicles, and perform safety checks daily.

  • Any sanitation activity required of the sanitation department to adequately perform public service responsibilities.

  • Assist in recycling activities.

  • Assist in solid waste disposal related activities when not driving a regular route.

  • Assist other departmental staff on special projects as directed.

  • Perform weekend and holiday duty as assigned.

  • In accordance with departmental policies, must be able to be contacted by phone in the case of an emergency; must be able to work overtime and respond on an on-call basis when necessary.

  • Positively represent the Sanitation Department by completing tasks in an efficient manner at all times and to the best of your ability.

  • Follow all department policies and procedures.

  • Attend safety classes, reinforce and comply with company safety policies

  • Work harmoniously with ESG employees and the public and comply with ESG policies.

Qualifications

Prefer six months of related experience, high school diploma or GED, or specialized vocational training preferred with six months to one year of experience in a related position. Must obtain and/or maintain any certifications required by applicable federal, state and local regulations and departmental policies. Must have at minimum a Georgia Class B Commercial Driver’s License and meet minimum driving standards. Monday - Friday 6am to 2pm is the work hours.

Knowledge of:

  • Process used in the collection and disposal of waste materials.

  • Guide others, requiring decisions, affecting the individual, co-workers; work in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures.

  • Make decisions with very minor impact - affects only the individual.

Skill in:

  • The use of various equipment and machinery such as hand tools and heavy equipment utilized in disposal activities such as compactors, lifts, claws and various hydraulic systems as well as shovels, brooms and rakes.

  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Ability to:

  • Read and write and follow oral and written instructions from supervisor.

  • Effectively communicate with employees and citizens who will inquire regarding disposal procedures.

  • Work with citizens who may have complaints on services provided.

  • Read simple sentences or instructions; write simple sentences; speak simple sentences using basic grammar.

  • Perform semi-routine work following procedures, with occasional problems; requires normal attention for accurate results.

Working conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, bright and/or dim light, dust or pollen, intense noise levels, vibration, fumes or noxious odors. All required safety standards shall be adhered to mitigate risk from moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, heights, blood-borne pathogens, traffic, animals and wildlife, toxic or caustic chemicals, and other identified hazards.

Physical requirements

This position requires frequent standing, kneeling, bending and climbing. The employee must be able to use hands to operate and manipulate tools and equipment. This position requires very heavy physical exertion including the ability to lift over 50 pounds and exert over 100 pounds of force on a regular basis.

The employee must be willing to work non-standard and overtime hours as required.

The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and depth perception.
