POSITION OVERVIEW

Workdays & Hours: Tuesday–Saturday 6:00am - 2:30pm (subject to change).

PURPOSE OF DIVISION

The purpose of Houston Airport System (HAS) Maintenance, General Maintenance Services business unit is to effectively deliver self-performed maintenance services at each of the three HAS airports.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The purpose of the Equipment Operator I in the Horticulture& Grounds Maintenance section of the Houston Airport System is to safely and efficiently operate minor equipment to perform a series of manual activities and tasks supporting the goal of "Opening Day Fresh" by prolonging the life and aesthetic beauty of airport's owned assets through effective, efficient, and proactive maintenance.

"Must be able to pass a criminal background check, obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required. Candidates must be able to obtain all security required badge access including Custom Border Patrol access within 6 months from the hire date."

The Equipment Operator I responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Trash & debris removal from boulevards, Airfield, and other public spaces.

  • Operation of small, powered equipment such as, Zero Turn Mowers, Push Mowers, Weed- eaters, Blowers, and small powered equipment.

  • Driving of automotive equipment from one location to the next.

  • Assisting with pavement break outs and repairs.

  • Minor Fence repairs.

  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. Requires the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements within fairly fine tolerance and/or calibration demands; or the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within moderate tolerance demands.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Six months of experience in the operation of plant or automotive equipment and attachments are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Depending on the type of equipment to be operated, a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required. Requires compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

PREFERENCES

  • Preference will be given to applicants who have the availability to work all shifts, including rotation, weekends and holidays

  • Experience with using minor mowing and power equipment.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
