Summary
The Equipment Repair team is part of a group that stewards the vehicles on campus through proactive preventative maintenance, diligent project management, quality field services - both for existing and new vehicles, positive collaboration and communication with our customers - inclusive of faculty, staff, and students and driven by a "customer first" philosophy. Our mission is to provide customer-centric, cost-effective, efficient and reliable maintenance while preserving and upgrading the integrity of all campus equipment.
The Mechanic III will perform technical work involving inspection, calibration, operating, preventive maintenance, and repairs to insure proper operation and of vehicles and other university equipment.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift loads and climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and work around confined areas with piping and wiring obstructions as needed to access equipment. Requires moderate to heavy physical activity that includes the ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, climb, balance, stand, and walk up to 8 hours per day.
- Occasionally required to enter utility tunnels and confined spaces.
- Must be able to clearly distinguish colors used on CRT screens and indicator lights.
Work Conditions
Physical Environment:
- Work is performed primarily in the field on campus.
- Requires exposure to high voltage electricity, high noise levels rotating, and other potentially dangerous equipment.
- Requires work in mechanical repair rooms, non-conditioned spaces, and dusty, dirty, and wet conditions.
- Requires personal protective equipment such as hearing protection, safety shoes, and safety glasses.
Work Hours and Travel:
- After-hours work may be required, or work outside the regular schedule may be needed.
- Available on a continuous "on-call" basis to respond to problems and emergencies affecting campus operations.
- Requires periodic travel to classes, conferences, and vendor sites as needed.
Essential Personnel
This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person at 6100 Main St., Houston, TX 77005. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.
This role is classified as an essential position, requiring on-site presence to carry out its vital functions effectively.
Proposed Hiring Range: Hourly* rate based on candidate and experience.
*Non-exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements:
Required Qualifications
- HS Diploma or equivalent
- Three years of related experience in vehicle maintenance in industry and institutions, including selection, troubleshooting, and maintenance and repair of vehicles and motorized equipment.
- Licenses / Certifications: Valid Texas Driver's License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of emplo ment) required with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past three years.
- Thorough knowledge of mechanical systems.
- Considerable knowledge of the design and operation of motors.
- Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicle equipment.
- Working knowledge of electricity.
- Understands and works from blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
- Advanced repair knowledge and proper use of associated tools and equipment.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities.
Preferences:
- College or trade school degree.
- Related experience working in a team environment.
- ASE certification.
- Analytical skills, clear reasoning ability, and be trusted to work on their own.
Essential Functions:
- Performs routine motor vehicle maintenance such as repairing or replacing tires, hoses, belts, and filters.
- Performs minor repairs to suspension and driveline components such as replacing universal joints, shocks, struts, and bushings.
- Performs minor body repair work and touch-up painting.
- Performs safety and emission inspections.
- Repairs or replaces brake components.
- Services, refuels, and changes oil in vehicles.
- Cleans and maintains shop, equipment, and tools.
- Assists in major motor vehicle repairs.
- May operate electronic or computerized diagnostic equipment using computer-based technical manuals to identify or verify system and component failures.
- May inventory parts and equipment.
- Assist in managing the Golf Cart Concierge Service
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
