Job Description

THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.

ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High school diploma or possession of a high school equivalency certificate (GED)

Twelve (12) months after an employee achieves a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), he/she shall advance to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed the required written and practical test(s), acquired the applicable certifications and has met the other requirements.

Experience

  • Level D

  • A minimum of two (2) years having satisfactorily performed the duties of an Auto/Light Truck Mechanic or related experience

  • Levels C

  • A minimum of three (3) years having satisfactorily performed the duties of an Auto/Light Truck Mechanic or related experience

  • Level B

  • A minimum of four (4) years having satisfactorily performed the duties of an Auto/Light Truck Mechanic or related experience

  • Level A

  • A minimum of five (5) years having satisfactorily performed the duties of an Auto/Light Truck Mechanic or related experience

  • Level AA

  • A minimum of six (6) years having satisfactorily performed the duties of an Auto/Light Truck Mechanic or related experience

  • Level AAL

  • A minimum of six (6) years having satisfactorily performed the duties of an Auto/Light Truck Mechanic or related experience

Certification/Licensure

  • Level D ¿ A minimum one (1) of the A1 thru A8 ASE Automobile Certifications

  • Satisfactorily pass all required Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and WMATA certification tests

  • Valid Class A Commercial Drivers (CDL) with proper endorsements.

Mission Essential Designation:

In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority¿s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

SUMMARY

The Auto Light Truck Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the Authority's automotive vehicles, to include automobiles, trucks and other gasoline powered vehicles. The incumbent diagnoses problems, aligns, inspects, overhauls, and modifies automotive vehicles within prescribed manufacturer and Authority guidelines, diagrams and manuals.

Job Levels : At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

¿AA Lead¿ Level: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs major repairs, inspections, adjustments, and maintenance on Authority automotive vehicles in accordance with manufacturers' maintenance instructions, operations manuals, diagrams and schematics, for ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition.

  • Diagnoses vehicle malfunctions using computers and analyzers, to determine needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.

  • Inspects assigned vehicles brake system, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, wiper blades, fan belts, exterior and interior condition, to ensure that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition.

  • Prepares written materials such as, repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, and warranty claims, to document activities, provide written reference and to comply with mandated requirements.

  • Corrects and adjusts steering geometry of vehicles. Utilizes hand and power tools, precision test equipment, to include test panels, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, oxy­ acetylene cutting and welding equipment, to ensure the availability of tools, equipment and safety within the workspace.

  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance program such as, oil change and brake check, for maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and to comply with mandated requirements.

  • Rebuilds components and assemblies, aligns and connects repaired units related mechanisms, and performs adjustments to ensure proper operation.

  • Lubricates and cleans parts and observes mechanical systems and devices in operation to detect causes of problems, for maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and complying with mandated requirements.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Attends unit in-service and safety meetings for conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job function.
