Position Summary

The holder of this position will be responsible for handling a wide range of professional accounting work. The position holder will prepare and manage internal files in the service of maintaining accurate accounting records, which are further used in preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.

Position Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of a financial reporting analyst is to assist with the preparation of the City’s Annual Financial Report, which includes validating and calculating financial data, inputting financial data into the annual report, and working directly with the financial reporting manager to provide information and reports.

  • A financial reporting analyst will prepare workpapers following rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

  • The position will prepare accounting reports, spreadsheets, and financial statements, research and compile data, and assist with creating annual reports.

  • The position will enter journal entries into financial systems, ensure accuracy of documents, and match records and reports to expenses.

  • The position conducts special projects regarding financial transactions, researches and analyzes accounting issues, performs financial calculations, and creates reports and compiles supporting documents for management review.

  • The position performs analysis of financial records and transactions, identifies and researches discrepancies, and resolves or makes recommendations for corrective actions.

  • The position assists in vital year-end processes such as the purchase order rollover process or the City and County.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, business, or a related field.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, primarily Excel and Word.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or eligible to sit for the CPA exam.

  • Familiarity with database tools such as PeopleSoft Finance or other ERP accounting systems.

  • Two (2) years of related work experience or one (1) year of experience with a public accounting firm or internal audit function of an organization.

  • Knowledge of or experience in local/state government including familiarity with GASB accounting standards.

Independent Judgment

Independent judgement is exercised in all aspects of the position. Preparing internal files and workpapers for the external audit requires many decisions, both in terms of deciding how to treat abnormal and unexpected variances and how to communicate with other parties to resolve any issues. Prioritizing tasks and organizing responses to auditors and internal financial staff are regular requirements for the position. Guidance will be provided and decisions will be reviewed by the Financial Reporting Manager.
