Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is

$150,000 - $220,000

As part of the Early Phase Oncology Business Operations team, the Senior Director of Oncology Discovery and Development Contracting will be responsible for drafting and negotiating complex contracts in a risk-based approach. This position is key in managing all Master Services Agreements (MSAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), Consulting Agreements, and other procurement-focused agreements. The role requires extensive experience in contract management, strong negotiation skills, and collaborative work across multiple teams to support drug discovery and development. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead negotiations and ensure compliance with company policies and legal requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Full lifecycle management of all MSAs, NDAs, and other complex procurement-focused agreements (such as licenses, consulting agreements and contract amendments) for Lilly’s Early Phase Oncology team.

  • Hands-on drafting and redlining of agreements.

  • Lead the assessment and negotiation of contractual legal obligations and terms with suppliers, including but not limited to scope, confidentiality, property ownership, privacy, indemnity, liability, and other core risk areas.

  • Collaborate with legal teams to assess and respond to counterparty redlines, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance requirements.

  • Serve as a key point of escalation and provide expert assistance to resolve complex contractual issues and inquiries.

  • Work within and across multiple teams, including Project Management, Scientific, Legal, Subject Matter Experts (SME), Business Operations, and Finance, to identify and mitigate potential risks associated with contractual agreements.

  • Identify suitable contract types that align with business needs, often exploring innovative solutions to ensure flexibility for constantly evolving business requirements while ensuring compliance.

  • Continuously advance multiple complicated contracts across various phases of negotiation to completion simultaneously, ensuring that all agreements are completed in a timely manner and in accordance with organizational goals and timelines.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to team members

  • Monitor and report on the status of ongoing contracts, contract performance and compliance and identifying and addressing any issues or risks.

  • Support the development of policies and procedures related to contract management, support continuous refinement of contract templates, guides, playbooks, tools, and contract management processes.

  • Keep abreast of industry trends and best practices in contract management and procurement.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in a scientific discipline. Advanced degree preferred (e.g. J.D, or Ph.D., MS in relevant scientific field).

  • 5+ years of contract management experience, including procurement-facing contracting to support discovery and development efforts in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical setting

  • Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization and/or visas for this role.

Ideal candidate will also:

  • Have an in-depth knowledge of early phase drug discovery and development

  • Be a people manager: supervise, train, and mentor mid-level and/or senior-level contract professionals.

Additional skills needed in role:

  • Expert contract drafting, review, analysis and negotiating skills across a variety of contract types including MSAs, PSAs, NDAs and software related contracts

  • Broad experience in all aspects of procurement focused contract management to include applicable key legal and contracting a with experiences

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively partner/influence cross-functionally and externally to deliver results

  • Must demonstrate flexibility and capacity to thrive in a dynamic, high-volume environment; capable of multitasking, prioritizing responsibilities, and navigating ambiguity effectively

  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively

  • Ability to work independently, managing and meeting strict deadlines

  • Excellent attention to detail and critical thinking skills

  • MS Office skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) experience and willingness to embrace technology
