Nexstar Media Group Sr. Director, Nextgen Technology & Engineering in Irving, Texas

Nexstar is a leader in the market transition to the newest broadcast standard, ATSC 3.0, which is being launched under the consumer name Nextgen TV. Beyond transitioning to support its broadcasting business, focused on Nextgen TV efforts, Nexstar is leveraging the ATSC3.0 standard and related investment to power the growing business opportunity of wireless data transmission. This role will serve as a key technical and business leader in this transition for Nexstar and in its related commercial initiatives.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support Nexstar's ATSC3.0 Nextgen TV and data transmission initiatives.

  • Support verification and validation testing of receivers and broadcast technologies.

  • Develop requirements and acceptance plans for qualifying software and station equipment.

  • Install, configure, test, and maintain operating systems, application software, virtual machines, and management tools to keep lab servers/ broadcast air chains up to date.

  • Manage all technical aspects of the existing datacasting-enabling technology partner set, ranging from relationship ownership to vetting of hardware, software and professional services.

  • Serve as liaison between technology partner set and internal Nexstar local broadcast station technical resources to ensure efficient Nextgen TV rollout and ongoing support and coordination.

  • Optimize and architect datacasting enabling technical solution stack.

  • Be a technical voice for Nexstar’s initiatives internally and externally at conferences, trade shows, with press, etc., to help drive awareness for Nexstar mission and activities.

  • Support ATSC3.0 business development activities, providing technical details and confirmation during customer opportunity development and helping with architecting customer/use-case specific solutions.

  • Contribute to Nextgen TV and datacasting product and solution development.

  • Explore and recommend emerging technologies (e.g. software defined radio, proprietary protocol development, etc.) that strengthen Nexstar's Nextgen TV and datacasting business efforts.

Qualifications:

  • BS degree or equivalent experience

  • 5-10 years of hands-on experience with the broadcast air chain

  • Understanding of the ATSC3.0 standard, its specifics, potential uses, etc.

  • Strong RF engineering skills and familiarity with coverage modeling techniques and tools

  • Ability to bridge between IT and broadcast technology.

  • Experience with public cloud providers, preferably with AWS.

  • Familiarity with microservices architecture and distributed systems.

  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills.

  • Deep knowledge of HEVC, AVC, MPEG-2, Dash, HLS and HDR.

  • Experience with video streaming technology (e.g., MPEG Dash, HLS, MSS and RTSP).

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
