Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC) - https://www.biotech.cornell.edu/core-facilities-brc/facilities/genomics-facility

Research and Innovation

What you will do:

Under very general direction, this position will manage all aspects of tracking and processing samples for Sanger sequencing within the Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC) Genomics Facility. The individual will use an electronic laboratory information management system (LIMS) and process up to hundreds of samples per day. The Sanger lab workflows require the operation of several liquid handling robots, as well as operation of automated DNA analyzers for the collection and distribution of data to customers. Other major responsibilities include the independent management and maintenance of moderately complex lab equipment, daily coordination and care of customer samples, preparation of buffers and reagents, setting up PCR reactions, analyzing results, keeping track of inventory, providing billing information, general customer support, and performing general lab maintenance. This individual will work independently to perform complex workflows on advanced instrumentation and is expected to resolve most issues autonomously. Acute attention to detail is essential to the successful execution of these responsibilities. Another important aspect of this position is customer support, requiring good written and verbal communication skills, professional interpersonal interactions, and computer proficiency.

Maintaining meticulous records for all sample processing steps and inventory of lab supplies is critical, including use of a custom LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) web site, which includes extensive sample-tracking and instrument setup features, data retrieval by the user, and invoicing for services provided. The information in the LIMS is critical to the Sequencing Technologies Manager as well as the Director of the Facility for quality control and monitoring performance of the laboratory. This laboratory receives samples from both internal and external researchers. Correct and timely processing of samples is critical to the success of the operation and the research projects of thousands of individuals.

What we need:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Associate's degree in biology, genetics, or a related field and up to 2 years relevant laboratory experience in biochemistry, molecular biology or related field, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Proficient with computer software including Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Adobe.
  • Experience with safe laboratory practices, and a strong mechanical aptitude with manual dexterity.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail while multitasking.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly identify problems that occur during laboratory processing.
  • Comfortable with routine workflows and repetition.
  • Works well both individually and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences.
  • Proven experience connecting diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing practices to business goals.

Experience or qualifications that would be extra helpful but are not required:

  • Bachelor's degree in science or technology or one to two years of molecular biology lab experience.
  • Familiarity or experience with Sanger sequencing technology or results.
  • Familiarity or experience with DNA quantification, PCR, or other molecular biology techniques.

This position is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of extension contingent upon continued funding.

For full consideration, please attach both a cover letter and resume to your application.
