Job Summary

The Senior Officer, Rail Flaw Detection is responsible for extending rail life by maintaining the rail test frequencies, operational excellence of the units and the quality of rail testing. The role oversees site visits across CN’s network to carry out rail flaw detection, audits, and procedures. Furthermore, the position is accountable for detailed investigations of in-service rail failures and segments of rail experiencing rapid deterioration. The incumbent develops the initial strategy on how to optimize rail testing frequencies to ensure its effective and efficient operation across Canada and the United States (U.S.).

Main Responsibilities

Rail Flaw Detection

· Carry out daily reporting to ensure the continued performance of vehicles

· Run and review daily reports generated per vehicle

· Ensure reporting and billing are accurate

· Ensure remedial actions are correct and that testing was carried out properly

· Schedule vehicles and provide weekly updates

· Participate in daily calls with the Ultrasonic Machine Operators and audit their work to ensure quality and compliance

· Contact dispatch centres for any issues regarding track time

· Handle testing frequencies to ensure compliance

People Management

· Lead unionized personnel

· Establish employee objectives and carry out regular touch-base meetings

· Provide mentorship, guidance, support, coaching, and feedback to direct reports

· Train and mentor new staff

· Communicate company policies and goals as well as prepare and monitor the development plan for staff

Investigate In-Service Rail Failures and Broken Rail Derailments

· Carry out in-depth investigations for in-service rail failures (i.e., broken rails, pull aparts, weld failures) rapidly deteriorating segments of rail or broken rail derailments

· Respond to significant outages or derailments to aid in the investigation process or provide operational support

· Receive and study pictures from Track Supervisors and local forces

· Resolve the root cause of failures, provide details of the last rail flaw detection tape analysis, the site analysis of track geometry, the detailed rail severity index with the track quality index and provide recommendations

· Write up a synopsis and communicate to the Regional Chiefs, Engineering

Working Conditions

The role is primarily performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions with a regular work week from Monday to Friday and requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidents. The role requires frequent travel (80%) to field sites across CN’s network in Canada and the U.S. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

Requirements

Experience

Railway and Management

· Minimum 2 years of experience in rail flaw detection

o Experience in data analytics

o Experience in track maintenance or building*

· Between 2 to 3 years of experience in a large organization

o Experience in Project Management

o Experience leading unionized and production line employees*

Education/Certification/Designation

· High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

· Valid Driver’s Licence

· Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering*

· Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) Designation*
