Qualifying experience: Employment counseling experience is defined as establishing a one-to- one employment counseling relationship, including gathering customer information and relating it to the labor market; selecting, utilizing, and analyzing results of career assessments; and developing and implementing employment plans.It is expected that employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status in the future, without having to compete in an examination. Employment Counselors provide vocational counseling and career development information to individuals looking for employment. They assess the individual’s vocational needs and capabilities as well as help them understand and resolve their problems to obtaining employment. Employment Counselors assist in developing an employment plan, maintain a record of interviews and provide follow-up assistance as necessary. Intensive job placement assistance is key through developing skills-based resume, successful employment interview coaching, providing continuing job leads, conducting employment referrals and advocating for the job seeker when applying for a job.
