Kalamazoo County Government Jail Nurse I/II in Kalamazoo, Michigan

GENERAL SUMMARY

The purpose of this job is to provide medical and nursing services to inmates within the Kalamazoo County Jail. Delivers care to inmates utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, and implementation in accordance with established medical protocols. Collaborates with community mental health, contracted physicians, local hospitals, and pharmacies to ensure effective patient treatment and care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assesses, evaluates, and treats medical concerns/conditions of inmates. Counsels inmates on medical treatments, hygiene, and proper health habits. Determines if further evaluation is required.
  • Administers medications to inmates on a regular basis.
  • Evaluates new intakes for jail placements, including assessing vital signs, injuries, levels of intoxication, and/or mental health concerns.
  • Conducts inmate physicals as required by the Michigan Department of Corrections.
  • Maintains medical inventory and supplies; manages and secures resident medications; plans medication distribution schedule; maintains medication documentation; and monitors patients' medication responses.
  • Collaborates with contracted medical providers, local pharmacies, and community mental health providers to ensure coordination of client care.
  • Assists in creating and updating jail protocol and policies related to medical needs.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Nurse I

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing
  • 1 to 3 years of related work experience in nursing   

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan

Nurse II

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing
  • 1 to 3 years of related work experience in nursing   

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
