The Location: * Kalispell is in a high-cost real estate market and applicants are encouraged to research the housing market before applying. Kalispell is a dynamic community located within a thirty-minute drive of Flathead Lake, Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort, Glacier National Park, several National and State forests and parks, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness area. Kalispell is the retail, professional, medical, and governmental center of the Flathead Valley serving approximately 150,000 people in northwest Montana. The office for this position is located within the Regional Headquarters building, located at 490 N. Meridian Rd., Kalispell. The regional headquarters is a well-maintained office building which houses all of the regional divisions including, Parks, Fisheries, Enforcement, Wildlife, Communication and Education, Technology Services, and Administration. *The Role: * The department is mandated to protect, perpetuate, enhance and regulate the sustainable use of Montana1s renewable wildlife resources for public benefit now and in the future. The Wildlife Division is responsible for developing programs that are responsive to that mandate. Programs are designed in coordination with Helena staff and implemented by regional field staff with technical assistance, professional advice and supervision of the Regional Wildlife Manager. The Wildlife Mitigation Program's primary objective is to preserve, create, enhance, restore and protect the functional values of key fish and wildlife populations and their associated habitats that were impacted by construction and operation of the Libby and Hungry Horse Dams. The Mitigation Program Wildlife Technician is an integral member •Of an interdisciplinary team of professionals collaborating on a variety of mitigation projects. The Technician will develop innovative ways to coordinate public access on over 300,000 acres of private land conservation easements held by FWP and monitor compliance of those easements in northwest Montana. The Technician will work closely with Regional Staff, landowners, and partners to implement studies to monitor the success of these efforts and make recommendations for improving biological and cost-effectiveness of these projects. The work of this position will help to improve and maintain relationships between FWP, landowners, and the public while balancing recreational pressure, access, and open lands policies with the requirements outlined in conservation easements and multi-resource management plans. The results of the Technician's efforts will provide guidance for current and future easement monitoring and will be applicable to projects within the Columbia River Basin and beyond. Working with the supervisor, the Technician coordinates field work schedule with biologists and other co­workers to collect a variety of scientific data associated with prioritized projects using established protocols and guidelines. The Technician works with minimal or no direct supervision and, as necessary, evaluates the situation and determines the best approach for data collection according to planned work. They will enter, record, summarize, and manage survey data using standard software and existing databases and may assist in the preparation and review of draft reports. They must maintain familiarity with and provide maintenance of a variety of field equipment. They will be required to purchase, assemble, maintain, and test field equipment, as directed. The Technician may serve as a lead worker for day-to-day operations; provide leadership and training for co-workers and volunteers; assign and monitors work tasks; establish work pace; demonstrate proper work methods; resolve day-to-day problems and report major issues to supervisor. An understanding of Montana's hunting heritage, recreational opportunities, natural resource rules and regulations is advantageous. Applicant must have aptitude for building and maintaining interpersonal relationships, preferably with private landowners, the publrc, and partner agencies. Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with a wide variety of people and personalities including ranchers, farmers, biologists, game wardens, hunters, anglers, and other recreationalists. Must have excellent customer service skills and a desire to help people. Must be tactful, courteous, and professional in communication approach. Should have ability to learn and understand hunting and fishing regulations, public use rules, and natural resource management. Applicant must be capable of learning and explaining department principles and concepts in a simple, clear, and effective way to members of the public. Must have ability to work independently with little to no daily supervision in both .rn office setting and from remote field locations. Must be able to navigate the landscape and administrative boundaries by using a GPS and maps depicting private and public landownership. Ability to learn basic situational awareness, perceive personal safety and safety of others is expected. Knowledge of Montana and understanding of agricultural practices is advantageous. A positive outlook and demeanor are required. *Physical and Environmental Demands: * Work will more than likely involve field activities that may require flexibility in work schedules, travel, and lifting heavy objects. The Technician may work with/around wildlife that may be dangerous, and work with/be exposed to potentially lethal capture drugs making working conditions routinely hazardous. Exposure to potentially harmful pathogens, chemical agents and offensive sights and sounds are routine. Extreme caution and rigorous protocol must be followed to prevent exposure to serious health hazards indoors and outdoors. Occasional exposure to outdoor hazards such as severe weather and extreme terrain is expected. The Technician may work in and around aircraft. Typical problems encountered by the Technician will involve field challenges relative to applications of standard techniques and procedures and the adaptations of techniques and procedures in a field setting. Specifically, the Technician may need to decide when, where and what modifications or adaptations would be necessary and appropriate to complete a specific task. Adaptations to procedures and modifications of field operations become necessary because of human safety issues, animal welfare considerations, landownership issues, or environmental conditions. Integrating all these factors into daily field operation decisions yet accomplishing study objectives will demand creativity within the bounds of the data collection standards and cooperation among field staff. Field activities will require good interpersonal skills that facilitate cooperation and support among the various affected interests working and living in the project or program area. Coordinating various agency personnel supporting the field operations is often complicated and requires good problem solving and interpersonal skills. *Job duration and/or specific work schedule: * This is a full-time, year-round position. Normal office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, but hours will vary and will include field work throughout the year. *Special Information: Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience): * The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a minimum of two years of college work towards a Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, fish and wildlife management, animal ecology, biology, or a closely related field and related work experience.
