Job Description Summary:
Full-time Research Associate position currently funded through August 2026 working under Dr. Frank T. Materia, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology and Population Health, at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) in Kansas City, KS. The position has an opportunity for extension depending on additional funding.
Dr. Frank T. Materia, Director of the new Mobile Health Implementation and Design Evaluations Laboratory (\"mHealth iDEAS Lab\") in the Department of Otolaryngology at KUMC, is seeking a full-time Research Associate to join the lab. The portfolio of current studies center on the design, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based mobile health interventions to improve the lifestyles and behaviors of historically underserved patient populations living with or at high-risk for chronic disease. The lab has a strong focus on using technologies such as smartphones, apps, text messaging, and wearables to monitor and intervene on health processes in real-time during patients\' daily lives. mHealth iDEAS Lab staff and trainees work closely with community-based partners (e.g., churches, community health centers, research groups at close by Universities) for study recruitment and data collection. Researchers best fit for this position will possess a keen interest in health equity, community-based research, behavioral medicine/health psychology, and/or digital health technologies. The Research Associate will also have the opportunity to cross-train and contribute to clinical research studies currently underway in the Department of Otolaryngology focused on topics related to personalized medicine, sensory function, artificial intelligence, and health disparities (among others). This position would be an excellent fit for a recent graduate of a health science/public health/psychology graduate program who already has a few years of research experience and wants to establish a career as a professional researcher.
Job Description:
Job Duties Outlined:
- Data collection, management, analysis, and report generation using Excel and SPSS (or similar statistical software).
- Planning of community- and clinic-based participant/patient recruitment procedures (e.g., at community health fairs, after church services, in-clinic at KUMC).
- Assist Principal Investigator in the development and writing of grants, manuscripts and reports.
- Communication with study locations and community partners on projects, analyses, and reports.
- Update IRB materials and maintain research compliance.
- Assist in supervision of graduate/medical students and resident researchers working with the lab.
- Coordinate lab calendars, meetings, and staff/trainee recruitment efforts.
- Track project purchasing and spending.

Required Qualifications
- Education: Master\'s degree in public health, Health Science, Psychology, He lth Services, or a related field. A combination of education and relevant experience may substitute for degree on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Work Experience:
- Three years\' experience in behavioral, clinical, or social sciences research.
- Experience in grant writing and personnel management.
- Community-based research experience is highly favorable.
- Experience in the use of SPSS (or a related statistical software), Microsoft products and applications.
