Position Title: Field Service Technician

Reporting To: Services and Methods Manager

Reporting Relationship: No other staff members reporting to this position.

Primary Purpose of Role:

Field Service support on all PRASA depos (KZN, CPT, GTN ..) and all TE depos (when required).Inspect, measure & test components, parts, conduct repairs on-site & in-house,

fault finding analysis, develop reports as per work conducted during on-site, train level investigations, training customer on Wabtec brake scope. Conduct FMI’s (field modifications) at all respective depos (Mechanical & Electrical).

Primary Objectives:

  • Set up and operate test equipment to evaluate performance of developmental parts, assemblies, or systems under simulated operating conditions, and record results

  • Prepare project cost and work-time estimates

  • Evaluate engineering proposals, shop drawings and design comments for sound electrical engineering practice and conformance with established safety and design criteria, and recommend approval or disapproval

  • Collaborate with production personnel to identify, define and solve developmental problems based on REX analysis

  • Conduct inspections at customer or suppliers’ premises for quality control and assurance programs, reporting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects

  • Build, calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical/electrical instruments or testing equipment on-site and off-site

  • Analyse and interpret test information to resolve process and or device problems

  • Manage and report accurately on Equipment downtime and fault logs, repairs conducted and data trend for repairs, 0KM or Warranty claims.

  • Manage accurate consumables stock levels.

  • Support WSA & FIPSA factory with production and technical advise as and when required.

  • Support Customer call outs at the different locations as and when required tied to the customers contractual requirements.

  • Standby and weekend coverage within the team roster always required (24hr availability and travel readiness).

Formal Education/Training

  • Qualified artisan (Millwright, Fitter, Electrician) N4, N5, N6, T2, T3 will be considered

  • Maintenance and repairs on Passenger/freight train sets, Brake systems, control units will be an advantage

  • Experience on pneumatics, mechanical and electrical fault finding will be advantageous.

  • Experience in a Team leader role

  • Experience in analyzing schematics (pneumatic & electrical)

  • Previous customer relationships and investigation involvements

  • Route course analysis knowledge

Essential work skills

  • Ability to solve practical problems

  • Adherence to company policies and procedures including Quality Assurance and safety

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety Legislations

  • Computer literacy (MS Office – developing xls, PPT sheets and data graphs)

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Sound verbal and written communication skills·

  • Valid driver’s licence – Code 8

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the route analysis techniques

  • A self-starter who is proactive and can set and achieve goals

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Hard working with a proven track record of skilled, hands-on trade related experience required.
