Mechanic II Service Mechanic

General Statement of Job:
An employee in this class performs complex duties in the operation, repair and maintenance of the vehicles in the school transportation program. Most work is performed based on prior experience. The employee is expected to resolve problems of medium difficulty with little assistance while others may be referred to a supervisor. Most errors may be expected to be resolved by the employee. The employee receivesgeneral supervision and work is occasionally reviewed while in progress. This employee reports to the shop foreman.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Diagnosesminorand frequently occurring mechanical problems.
- Diagnoses complex mechanical problems.
- Operates specialized power equipment to recondition motor assemblies.
- Conducts complete engine tune up using computerized equipment.
- Repairs and replaces brake drums.'
- Adjuststimingmechanism,replaces and setspointsandplugs,andrefacesvalves.
- Rotates, aligns, and balances wheels.
- Installs shock absorbers.
- Repairs and replaces damaged vehicle body parts.
- Tests electrical systems and makes necessary repairs.
- Repairs carburetors, ignition systems, and electrical components.
- Repairselectrical systems to insure proper functioning.
- Repairs, adjusts or replaces starters, generators,transmissions and clutch assemblies.
- Checks and repairs doors andlifts.
- Removes,replaces and reassembles transmissions; clutches;fuel, oil, and water pumps;generatorsand otherparts ofthe engine and suspension system.
- Straightens damaged frames,repairsand replaces differentials, drive shafts,front end and steering mechanisms.
- Performs North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles requiredinspectionofbuses andotherschool-owned vehicles.
- Assists and provides instruction to lower level mechanics.
- Performs general maintenance as needed
Additional JobFunctionsor Assigned Tasks:
- Weekly cleaning of all work areas
- Assigned monthly rotation to clean restrooms,break room, and carrying out of all waste
MinimumTrainingand Experience:
- Considerable knowledge ofschoolbusand vehicle operation andmaintenance.
- Considerable knowledge of theoperatingprinciples of internal combustion engines and other mechanical components of school buses and service vehicles.

``` - Considerable knowledge of the toolsandequipment used in automotive repair shops. - Considerable knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the electrical and generating systems of automotive equipment. - Skill to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement, andvehicle body repair. - Ability to determine appropriate methods to repair improperly operating automotiveequipment. - Ability to comprehend and apply NorthCarolinaInspection Law. - Skill to physicallyperformmanualtasks associated with enginemaintenanceand vehiclebodyrepair. - Ability to read and comprehend technical materials. - Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Function:
Sufficient educationandexperienceto demonstrate possessionoftheneeded knowledge and abilities
Other Requirements:
- Appropriate NorthCarolinadriver'slicenseforthe weight and typeofvehiclesoperated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles,
- Maintain an acceptable driving record.
- Maintain an acceptableattendancerecord.
- Be certified as a North Carolina school bus inspector effective August 2011.
