Job Description

Aquatic Biologist 9-P11

This position serves as staff support for Michigan’s Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program (FCMP). The responsibilities of this position include serving as a crew member to collect and process fish from Michigan’s Areas of Concern (AOCs), the Great Lakes, and its tributaries, assisting with caged fish studies to assess chemical concentrations in select Great Lakes tributaries, assisting with field collection gear cleaning and maintenance, and entering data received from the analytical laboratory into the FCMP database.

Aquatic Biologist 12

This position serves as a recognized resource within Water Toxic Unit (WTU) for the assessment of spatial and temporal trends of chemical contaminants in Michigan’s surface waters and fish. This position also serves as staff support for Michigan’s Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program (FCMP). Additional responsibilities of this position include overseeing fish collections from Michigan’s Areas of Concern (AOCs), the Great Lakes, and its tributaries, maintaining and cleaning FCMP field collection gear and equipment, and coordinating staff training to build capacity of the Section to collect samples for the FCMP and maintaining the Section's training matrix for FCMP field collections.

Required Education and Experience

Education

Possession of a bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in any combination of aquatic biology, aquatic entomology, environmental science, environmental toxicology, fisheries biology, hydrology, limnology, statistics, water science or wetland ecology.

Three years of professional experience in assessing the effects of pollution on aquatic life equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist, including one year equivalent to an Aquatic Biologist P11.
