What You Will Do

The National Criticality Experiments Research Center Facility Operations (NCERC-FO) is seeking motivated and qualified candidates to fill the position of Nuclear Facility Engineer. The NCERC-FO division supports the execution of subcritical and critical experiments, measurements, and training at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) located at the Device Assembly Facility at the Nevada Nuclear Security Site. We are responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting the critical assemblies as well as managing the substantial inventory of material used in testing and experimental campaigns. NCERC operates four criticality assemblies that can be broadly categorized as benchmark, fast-burst, and general-purpose assemblies. These assemblies provide the capability to perform critical, subcritical, and fundamental physics measurements.

The Nuclear Facility Engineer position will support LANL project, engineering, and maintenance activities at NCERC in Las Vegas, Nevada, perform Fissionable Material Handling duties, and provide miscellaneous support services in a Hazard Category 2 Nuclear Facility.

In this role, the Nuclear Facility Engineer's core responsibilities include:

  • Assist NCERC systems engineers in design and operations documentation.

  • Support nuclear operations through preparation and staging of experimental equipment.

  • Execute hands-on manipulation of special nuclear material, maintenance of critical assembly machines, and equipment setup in support of future operations.

  • Perform various project support tasks to include decontamination activities, escorting customers and visitors, etc.

  • Coordinate NCERC activities with adjacent organizations, synchronizing schedules for maximum efficiency.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge in the areas of mechanical, electrical, and/or nuclear engineering.

  • Ability to perform hands-on activities related to equipment testing and maintenance.

Communication

  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to colleagues, management, and sponsors.

Collaboration and Prioritization

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate multiple project schedules into an executable plan with respect to personnel, equipment, and facility availability.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, and make decisions, solve problems, exercise good judgment, work under time constraints, work with minimal supervision and prioritize workload.

Clearance

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance. Obtaining a Q clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by, or on behalf of, the Federal Government for access to classified matter.

Education : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) is highly desirable.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located at the Nevada Nuclear Security Site. All work locations are at the discretion of management

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance : Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP : This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regula--on, Part 712, ยง712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants : Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
