Mississippi Employer Fiber Optics Technician in LAUREL, Mississippi
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for broadband service installs, terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables with an end goal of providing maximum operating efficiency for the Association and DE Fastlink. The Fiber Optic Technician will have the opportunity to apply technical expertise to a variety of situations by evaluating problems and implementing best solutions. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports to: Broadband Operations Manager **MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Complete installation of equipment in subscriber's home and train subscriber to use said equipment.**
Test, activate, and troubleshoot equipment after installation.
Works closely with Customer Service Department to maintain an aggressive yet achievable home installation schedule.
Installs, disconnects, reconnects, adds, changes, and troubleshoot Internet and Telephone connections/lines.
Respond in a friendly and courteous manner to all service requests.
Coordinate fiber activities with electric lineman and other aerial communications linemen and other departments as necessary
Perform ring cuts on live fiber without affecting existing services
Perform fiber tests with OTDRs, light source and meters
Find and perform maintenance on fiber lines during outages
Provides accurate equipment location, splicing and terminating records for the fiber database
Monitor, communicate and perform corrective actions to fix problems affecting any fiber or fiber related equipment
Install demarcation enclosures, switches and other telecom equipment
Provide detailed paperwork and documentation to ensure accurate record-keeping, billing and inventory
Self-supervise all operations to ensure that all splicing operations are completed in accordance with customer and industry specifications.
Field train and control/oversee the work of other Splicers when necessary.
Complete daily production reports, mark-up maps, keep track of work hours, complete "as-built maps" for areas built and track daily production
Reconcile all issued parts and materials on a daily basis to ensure accurate material usage counts. Possess a good understanding of fiber documentation and have the ability to assist in laying out new fiber circuits
Job Knowledge, Training and Experience: Must have experience with fiber optics and preferably, ADSS cable. A high school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 2+ years of experience in outside plant fiber splicing, customer premise equipment installation, network access equipment installation, and network trouble shooting preferred. Familiar with standards and best practices for premise entry and electronic equipment installation. Understanding of the technologies and standards as they apply to the installation of fiber optic networks. Working knowledge of design and layout for fiber terminations. Knowledge of CAT5E/CAT6 network cable EIA/TIA 568A/B standards and color codes. Experience installing RJ45 plugs and wall jacks. Must possess and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of installation, maintenance, and removal of fiber optic customer premise equipment. Must have strong computer skills and ability to learn new software and computer-related skills.

Equipment Operated: Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Mississippi Driver's License. Must be able to operate computers, GPS equipment, OTDR's, light source, light meters, fusion splicer, and bucket truck.
Abilities and Skills
:
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills are required; must be able to prioritize and manage work tasks while maintaining a high degree of detail and accuracy. Position requires both written and oral communication skills. Positions requires the ability to train and influence others with respect to the basic principles of fiber optic networks, fiber optic splicing, fiber troubleshooting, and fiber optic testing. Must be comfortable working at elevated heights and confined spaces. Ability to work under minimal supervision, within broad guidelines of procedures and goals. Ability to differentiate color codes, as well as read and understand manufacturer's manuals for operating and repairing of electronic equipment and components. Ability to climb poles using gaffs and climbing belt as needed preferred.
