Job Description:

30% - Plans, prepares and presents brief recorded weekly content overview lectures (approx. 30 minutes) AND facilitates one synchronous, interactive weekly evening class session via Zoom for one graduate course in organizational communication based on an approved course syllabus. Live weekly class sessions are recorded and posted to Blackboard for student reference. Courses are 8-weeks in length and required live Zoom class sessions are facilitated from 6:30 – 9:00pm Central Time, typically on Monday or Thursday evenings.

30% - Provides timely, meaningful, supportive feedback on assignments both verbally in class and on written assignments via the learning management system to students in support of individual growth and maintaining an inviting classroom climate.

20% - Maintains office hour availability at times convenient for working adult students, and offers timely response to student questions via email. Engages with individual students in a way that demonstrates awareness of and respect for difference -- and a commitment to an inviting learning environment for all.

20% - Updates existing PowerPoints, written assignment instructions, and discussions boards within learning management system (Blackboard) as needed to support student learning in each class section. Maintains well-organized, accurate and easy to navigate content within Blackboard.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Doctorate degree completed in Communication Studies or relevant communication studies sub-discipline (organizational communication, interpersonal communication, rhetoric, etc.).

  2. Candidates with only a master’s degree in Communication Studies or related communication studies sub-discipline may be considered for PFS 730.

  3. Demonstrated experience and intermediate to advanced level technical skill in using online meeting platforms (i.e. Zoom) and functionality in support of participant engagement and adult learning (general navigational expertise, use of breakout rooms and polling, etc.).

  4. Minimum of two years of professional experience (public sector, private sector, entrepreneurship).

  5. Evidence of ongoing personal commitment to professional development related to addressing issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in the college classroom and/or workplace.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Evidence of prior success in teaching or training, preferably at the graduate level, and preferably both in-person and online (e.g. course evaluation summary, supervisor or teaching peer evaluations).

  2. Demonstrated experience creating and managing course content within a learning management system such as Blackboard (i.e., structuring modules, using folders and posting/updating documents), offering clear, organized online grading and feedback, and maintaining social presence in the asynchronous component of courses.

  3. Completed graduate level course work or professional training from credentialed provider related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) issues in the workplace or teaching/classroom environment.

Position Overview:

The Organizational Communication Graduate Program in the School of Professional Studies at the University of Kansas Edwards Campus invites qualified practitioner-scholars to submit applications that will be reviewed by the search committee and placed in a pool for consideration for part-time lecturer positions. A lecturer teaches graduate level courses and must possess an advanced terminal degree. A lecturer in a non-tenured, non-tenure track position with course instruction as the focus of this contract position. Classes and class days offered may vary each semester and are dependent upon curricular need, student enrollment and funding availability. All courses are offered online and include required weekly live/synchronous meetings and asynchronous activities. Lecturers report to the director of the Organizational Communication Graduate Program.
