Los Alamos National Laboratory Linux Server Administrator (Computing Systems Professional 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

The Weapons Research Services, Secure Networks and Assurance (WRS-SNA) group is looking for a creative Linux server, and storage administrator to be part of our Systems Operations (SysOps) team. Working within this team, the successful candidate will support the existing infrastructure and help to implement new infrastructure within the Weapons Physics Directorate (ALDX) and Weapons Engineering and Experiments Directorate (ALDW). This infrastructure allows scientific software weapons engineering teams to efficiently leverage modern professional software development practices and provides a platform for various weapons services used within the weapons directorate.
In this role you will be working closely with the team implementing new infrastructure (to include virtualization and containers). Installing, configuring, and maintaining new/existing servers in a non-virtualized and virtualized infrastructure. Storage systems administration, performing regular system and security monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes. Providing support as requested by customers and developer staff. Developing and maintaining documentation that describes system installation and configuration procedures.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical Knowledge: Ability to conduct advanced research and recommend practical solutions for evolving industry practices and regulatory requirements. Candidates must have proven experience in designing and implementing solutions for complex computing infrastructures, with a focus on incorporating emerging technologies. Candidates should possess extensive experience in providing operational support, including troubleshooting, managing permissions, training users, and tasks such as system installation, configuration, performance tuning, and maintenance. Expertise in ensuring system integrity through robust backup schedules, disaster recovery procedures, and the deployment of hardware and software solutions is required. Strong capabilities in developing and maintaining comprehensive documentation for system configurations, installations, and operational procedures are necessary, along with the ability to conduct hardware and software audits to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines. Advanced proficiency in software development methodologies, tools, and programming languages is essential. The role also requires a deep understanding of hardware architectures, operating systems, network infrastructures, and client-server principles, as well as expertise in web-based technologies, including software integration and testing. Strong skills in project management, risk assessment, and the implementation of emerging computing technologies are fundamental to success in this position.
Communication: Comprehensive technical writing and verbal communication skills to handle communication with technical and non-technical peers, customers, and stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to initiate, design and lead technical efforts.
Collaboration: Strong teamworking and collaboration skills working with internal and external stakeholders. Uphold safety and security protocols in all tasks, taking proactive measures to address unsafe or non-compliant conditions. Demonstrated experience working independently with minimum supervision, as well as effectively as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.
Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience with Linux server systems on VMware platforms.
Familiarity with modern configuration management tools such as Puppet, Chef, or Ansible.
Background in storage systems administration and high-availability production environments.
Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python, Perl).
Active DOE Q clearance
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is located in Los Alamos.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
