PPL Corporation Fleet Performance Engineer in Louisville, Kentucky

Overview

This position is responsible for performing, under supervision, challenging engineering work but with limited direct responsibility. This position is within the Fleet Performance Engineering group and will focus on supporting power generation plant processes and systems. Will be filled according to qualification and experience.

The position will be filled based on the successful candidate's experience level: Engineer I, II, III or Principal.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and/or suggests improved methods.

  • Gathers, correlates, and analyses specific data using established procedures.

  • Performs detailed and/or routine engineering assignments involving established calculations, tests, and analysis.

  • Performs a variety of routine tasks to become familiar with the engineering methods, practices, and programs of the company.

  • Supports operating and maintenance functions with problem identification, engineering analysis, and problem resolution activities.

  • Prepares and presents reports giving conclusions of job related engineering activities.

  • Assists other engineers with large projects, as needed.

  • Assists with the development of engineering goals, objectives, budgets, programs, and procedures.

  • Plans and controls all activities so as to provide an accident-free work place.

  • Conducts work activities with regard to environmental rules and regulations.

  • Regularly reviews assignments to ensure optimum efficiency and cost effectiveness.

  • As experience allows, provides engineering insight for air quality control systems (AQCS), thermal performance, and other general power generation plant processes. This includes combustion optimization, boiler/HRSG performance, combustion turbine performance, steam turbine cycle thermal performance, balance of plant component performance, selective catalytic reduction and catalyst lifecycle management, particulate removal, water treatment systems, flue gas desulfurization, and by-products systems.

  • Provides holistic engineering insight to evaluate and improve unit heat rates.

  • Provides in-house consulting and expertise as well as development and improvements for holistic plant process optimization.

  • Potential to assist with calculating Key Performance Indicators, GADS event/data management, and utilizing data sets for internal/external reporting.

  • Occasionally directs the activities of coops, supervisors, and others as they perform various activities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications

Requirements

ABET Accredited Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental, or Civil engineering preferred.

  • Ability to analyze and solve engineering problems from a business perspective.

  • Prior experience with boiler and flue gas path equipment operation and optimization, including combustion control and emissions optimization.

  • Prior experience with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system operations, maintenance, and performance

  • Experience managing a range of projects from small to large including developing schedules, managing budgets, interpreting policy or regulatory guidance, and developing correspondence.

  • Prior experience with modeling software such as PEPSE, Vista, or similar modeling packages.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate technical issues and solutions to broad audiences.
