Job Description Summary
The Staff Engineer – Mechanical Design leads all aspects of Preliminary engine design, including weight/cost targeting, estimation, and trades. They will demonstrate accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives to develop innovative preliminary design concepts, simultaneously meeting aggressive cost and performance targets for key next generation engine applications. This role will focus on supporting advanced commercial programs, where you will help guide, influence, and drive change in architecture choices and technology investments.
As an Staff role they will execute these functions with a high level of independence, navigating the different organizations inside GE Aerospace. They will self-guide interactions with systems and supporting organizations, getting to consensus and buy-in as needed.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities:
In the role of Staff Engineer - PD Mechanical Design, you will integrate and develop processes that meet business needs across the organization, manage complex issues within functional area(s) of expertise.
Additionally, in the role of Staff Engineer - PD Mechanical Design, your responsibilities will include:
· Leads the cross-section development for preliminary design architecture studies, including cost roll ups, and technology assessments to support successful execution of program deliverables
· Proactively develops new and creative solutions, incorporating new and advanced technologies
· Challenges the current processes and practices, establishing new options to become faster and push the limits of their domain
· Anticipates problems, making cross-product linkages, and advises others.
· Develop action plans and get buy in from stakeholders.
· Lead the development and integration of parametric tools to enable parametric design space exploration and optimization studies
· Work with focals across GE Aerospace to shape cross-section, weight, cost, and maintenance strategy for PD and GE Aerospace
· Prepare invention disclosures to protect technology that gives the business a competitive advantage, as well as protecting the intellectual property rights of the company
· Execute with high level of independence the analysis / evaluation of assigned projects that meet business standards, practices and procedures and the product / program requirements
· Provide technical guidance to other personnel and global / cross-functional assigned teams; mentor others in the organization
· Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and / or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures
· Monitor and communicate project status, business issues and significant developments
· Lead or participate in organizational efforts in assigned projects and / or tasks
· Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews
Qualifications/Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree in engineering an accredited University or College
· Minimum of 8 years of experience in an engineering position
Desired Characteristics:
· Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university
· Minimum of 10 years of experience in a mechanical engineering, supply chain, sourcing, or manufacturing operations position
· Experience estimating weight, product cost, maintenance cost, and design parameters early in engine development programs
· Experience with Unigraphics NX
· Prior experience leading global cross-functional teams
· Strong oral and written communication skills
· Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
· Ability to guide and influence others
· Demonstrated process orientation in approach to work
· Exposure to both military and commercial engine design requirements
· Demonstrated ability to document, plan, market and manage programs that further the knowledge, understanding and capability of the business
· Problem analysis and resolution skills
· Systems thinking
