Actalent Construction Inspector in Madison, Wisconsin

Job Title: Construction InspectorJob Description

We are seeking a dedicated Construction Inspector to perform construction observation and documentation. Responsibilities include construction material sample collection, laboratory data management, and surveying, ensuring compliance with construction documents. This role involves preparing and submitting daily field logs, reporting field conditions and test results, and performing sampling and monitoring of various materials and environmental factors.

Responsibilities

  • Perform construction observation and documentation, including construction material sample collection, laboratory data management, and surveying.

  • Ensure compliance with construction documents.

  • Prepare and submit daily field logs reporting data collected, field observations, actions taken, and recommended actions to be taken.

  • Report field conditions and test results to supervisors and sometimes directly to the client.

  • Perform sampling and/or monitoring of soil, soil vapor, groundwater, surface water, air, geosynthetics, landfill gas, and leachate.

  • Coordinate work with contractors, subcontractors, and laboratories.

  • Prepare documentation reports for construction activities observed, health & safety plans, and other work documents.

  • Complete a 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training if not already trained.

  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Work with construction contractors ensuring specifications and drawings are correctly fulfilled.

  • Conduct surveying (training provided).

  • Perform density testing and soil sampling, and deliver samples to labs.

  • Conduct inspection and quality control, and document results using Word and Excel.

  • Perform general oversight of civil construction related activities including culverts, piping, road building, gas extraction well elements, and restoration tasks.

  • Conduct daily report writing and photography.

  • Survey to ensure proper grades for subgrade, clay, topsoil, etc.

  • Perform soil testing using a nuclear density gauge for density.

  • Collect soil samples including aggregate, sand, etc.

  • Oversee geosynthetics such as geomembrane, GCLs, and geocomposite.

Essential Skills

  • 2+ years of civil construction or earth work experience.

  • Experience in quality control or inspection work.

  • Proficiency in utilizing Excel and Word.

  • Willingness to work in the field 100% of the time and work long hours during the summer (10-11 hour days, M-F).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior experience in quality control or inspection on civil construction projects.

  • Ability to travel.

Work Environment

This role will be based at a solid waste landfill site, with work conducted in the field 100% of the time. When not on-site, remote work is available. The position requires working 10-11 hour days, Monday through Friday, during the summer, with weekend work preferred. Projects are located across the Midwest, typically lasting 2-6 months, with the inspector home most weekends. The work environment is laid back, and the company has a strong reputation with numerous utility and landfill projects.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $35.00/hr.
