Morton County Assistant States Attorney in Mandan, North Dakota

Morton County is seeking a dedicated Assistant State’s Attorney to focus primarily on juvenile and criminal prosecutions. This role offers a competitive salary ranging from $70,000 to $125,000, commensurate with experience. Responsibilities and Duties

The Assistant State’s Attorney will:

  • Prosecute criminal and juvenile cases, including trials, appeals, and administrative proceedings.

  • Prepare evidence, exhibits, and legal documents necessary for litigation.

  • Conduct legal research and draft findings of fact, conclusions of law, and court orders.

  • Advise County officials, employees, and law enforcement on legal matters.

  • Represent the County in civil lawsuits, criminal cases, and administrative hearings.

  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with the judiciary, attorneys, law enforcement, and county officials.

  • Interpret and apply municipal, state, and federal laws.

  • Interview parties involved in legal proceedings and assess evidence.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.

  • Handle pretrial hearings, plea agreements, and other case resolutions.

  • Provide legal consultation, advice, and support to stakeholders.

  • Manage multiple cases and projects with competing deadlines effectively.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Education and Licensing:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of North Dakota.

Preferred Experience:

  • One year or more as an attorney or post-graduate law training in a specialized field.

  • Proficiency with legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw) and office software (Microsoft Office Suite).

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong legal research, analysis, and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective oral and written communication, with persuasive public speaking abilities.

  • Skilled in negotiation, risk management, and drafting legal documents.

  • Ability to build trust and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of municipal, state, and federal laws relevant to government operations.

  • Capacity to manage sensitive and high-stakes situations with tact and diplomacy.

  • Proven ability to handle multiple cases and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
