Development Resource Group, Inc. Controls Electrical Hardware Engineer in Maple Grove, Minnesota

The Controls Electrical Hardware Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing electrical hardware systems for industrial automation and control applications. This role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to create reliable, efficient, cost-effective hardware solutions that meet project requirements. The engineer will support the entire lifecycle of the control systems, from concept design through testing and deployment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Design & Development: Develop electrical hardware designs for control systems, including schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams. Specify and select electrical components such as PLCs, HMIs, sensors, actuators, relays, motor drives, and communication devices. Create and review detailed engineering documentation, including BOMs (Bill of Materials). Design and integrate safety systems, ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards (e.g., ISO 13849, IEC 62061). Safety Compliance: Evaluate machine and system designs for risks, implementing safety circuits and components such as emergency stops, light curtains, safety relays, and interlocks. Perform risk assessments and ensure the design meets safety requirements while maintaining functionality. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to validate safety designs through testing and documentation. Testing & Validation: Perform hardware verification and validation to ensure design requirements and standards compliance. Conduct bench testing and troubleshoot hardware issues during the development phase. Collaborate with software engineers to integrate hardware and control logic effectively. Project Management & Collaboration: Work with project managers, mechanical engineers, and other stakeholders to define system specifications and timelines. Support installation, commissioning, and start-up of control systems at customer sites or production facilities. Ensure designs comply with relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., UL, CE, NFPA, IEC). Optimization & Support: Identify opportunities for cost reduction, performance improvement, and energy efficiency in hardware designs. Provide technical support to maintenance and operations teams for troubleshooting and system upgrades. REQUIREMENTS Education & Experience: Bachelor s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field. 3-5+ years of experience in designing industrial electrical control systems. Technical Skills: Proficiency with electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN). Solid understanding of PLCs, HMIs, industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc.), and control components. Familiarity with motor control systems, including VFDs, servo drives, and soft starters. Knowledge of safety standards and systems (e.g., safety relays, light curtains, e-stops). Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Excellent communication and teamwork abilities. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with robotics, vision systems, or advanced automation technologies. Certification in electrical or automation standards (e.g., PE, TUV Functional Safety). Hands-on experience with panel assembly or field wiring.
