Position overview:
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory¿s (SLAC) Facilities and Operations (F&O) Division manages one of the world¿s premier science facilities on a 400-acre Stanford site with 150+ structures comprised of office and research facilities for the Department of Energy. We are a dynamic service organization committed to the support and success of the Laboratory's Scientific Mission by providing safe and responsive engineering, construction, operations and maintenance of equipment, buildings, and infrastructure.
Working under general supervision (or under the direction of a lead technician or supervisor), the Fire Alarm Technician will perform journeyman level work involved in the installation, testing, inspection, maintenance and repair of the SLAC fire protection system and equipment. The SLAC fire alarm system consists of 27 MXL panels, 7 XLS panels, 5 System 3 Panels, 1 Gamewell Panel and 25 VESDA Systems reporting to a central station dispatch through AES radios. Assignments are normally received in the form of work orders or verbal instructions. Work is performed independently and is inspected in progress and upon completion for compliance with specifications. This position reports Fire Protection Systems Supervisor.
Your specific responsibilities include:
Perform maintenance and repair of fire protection systems and equipment for the Campus and SLAC facilities. Working under general supervision (or under the direction of a lead technician or supervisor), the Fire Alarm Technician performs journeyman level work involved in the installation, testing, inspection, maintenance and repair of fire protection systems and fire alarm monitoring equipment.
Inspect, test maintain, and repair fire protection systems and monitoring equipment, such as fire suppression and extinguishing systems and fire alarm systems in accordance with the California Fire Code (CFC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
Maintain computer-based inspections in accordance with applicable regulations.
Install devices associated with fire alarm and sprinkler systems (e.g., fire alarm control panels and modules, conduits, wires, water flow switches, etc.).
Respond to fire system emergencies at any time.
Review plans for compliance with the CFC and NFPA codes.
Inspect and perform final walk-through of installed systems in new and major/minor renovations construction projects.
Perform system acceptance test with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Maintain adequate levels of work supplies. Order fire protection equipment under direction of supervisor or lead technician.
Plan, schedule and coordinate testing and/or maintenance service with building managers, supervisors and lead technician.
Respond to campus or SLAC emergencies.

High School diploma and three years' experience as a journeyman level alarm technician or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Requires thorough working knowledge of NFPA regulations, National Electric Code, OSHA requirements, general work safety procedures, and other applicable regulations.
Requires knowledge of electrical and electronic theory and practices (low voltage), usually acquired through the completion of an associate degree in electronics or equivalent certification in electronic trade school, or on the job training.
Must have working knowledge of the theory of operation of various fire protection systems and equipment.
Must have working knowledge and practice of sprinkler and operate and repair water based systems as well as associated tools.
Must have the ability to repair typical equipment encountered, test equipment, diagnose and trouble-shoot problems, and perform new installations under minimum supervision and technical advice.
Basic knowledge of PC-based computer systems.
Ability to communicate effectively with others both verbally and in writing.
Ability to obtain and maintain state certification and NICET Level 2 certification in Fire Alarm Systems.
- Must possess and maintain a valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver¿s License.

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
The expected pay range for this position is $ 50.20 (Step 1) - $ 60.72 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
