School/College/Division Description

The Department of Biological Sciences is large, complex, dynamic, and very productive with an annual budget of approximately $7.7M including grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Department of Energy, etc. It consists of 20 faculty, 10 academic staff, 6 classified staff, 9 postdocs/research associates, approximately 50 graduate students and a varying number of undergraduate teaching assistants and student hourly employees.

The Department of Biological Sciences offers an undergraduate degree program with four different areas of focus (Ecology, Evolution and Behavior; Cell and Molecular Biology; Microbiology; and General Biology), as well as our Master’s program (with a thesis and non-thesis option) and a PhD program. Our department works with a significant international student population as well.

Job Summary

This is a fixed term renewable appointment.

Work will be performed primarily on-site. Hybrid work options may be available with specifics regarding work location requirements discussed during the interview process.

Responsibilities include instructional laboratory support for introductory and non-major Biology and upper-level Ecology/Evolution courses in the Department of Biological Sciences.

  • Set up and break down of weekly laboratory exercises for all assigned courses

  • Participate in weekly prep meetings to support instructors in the proper execution of laboratory exercises and troubleshoot problems so that instructional labs are fully prepared to conduct instructional activities

  • Contribute to the improvement and design of instructional laboratory exercises to support student learning

  • Coordinate ordering and receipt of lab materials and supplies for assigned labs, including those collected live in the field, service and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and disposal of chemical and biological waste

  • Maintain inventory system of chemical solutions, laboratory equipment, biological models, and preserved and living biological material for all assigned laboratories

  • Establish, implement, and monitor procedures that ensure instructor, student, and visitor safety in assigned laboratories in compliance with campus, state, and federal regulations

  • Evaluate and maintain the budget for supplies and equipment for assigned laboratories

  • Manage year-round care for live specimens

  • Provide on-call assistance to teaching assistants from 8am – 8pm Mon-Fri

  • Supervise teaching assistants, laboratory technicians, and student employees working in assigned laboratories

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in Biological Sciences or related field

  • Biological laboratory and fieldwork experience to safely perform routine and analytical work needed to prepare and maintain reagents, equipment, and materials used in exercises and experiments

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of common software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams

  • Strong written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, and students

    Preferred Qualifications

  • MS, PhD, or graduate coursework in Ecology, Zoology, or Botany

  • Experience in managing biological laboratory activities (2+ years preferred)

  • Teaching experience in Biological Sciences

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills

  • Be able to supervise teaching assistants and interact with faculty to enhance laboratory experiments and student success

    Target Salary Range $55,000-$65,000/annually (Final salary offer will be determined by finalist's experience, training, education, and equity-based factors.)
