Position Summary :

The Computed Tomography (CT) Technologist is a highly skilled professional who uses specialized computerized x-ray equipment to produce cross sectional images of human anatomy which aid radiologists in diagnosing a wide variety of diseases and disorders. Technologist may perform radiographic procedures at a technical level requiring sound understanding of anatomical positioning and physiology; a high degree of technical competency and with the ability to act with initiative and ingenuity with minimal supervision. Apply ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis in adult and/or pediatric radiology as needed.

Duties:

  • Review outpatient orders prior to day of procedure to ensure accuracy and to avoid delay in patient care.

  • Provide excellent patient care by educating and preparing patients for their procedure while utilizing effective communication.

  • Obtain and document accurate patient medical history to assist radiologist’s interpretation.

  • Ensure patient comfort and safety for the duration of their procedure.

  • Prepare to operate CT equipment to capture the appropriate images following the protocol set forth by the radiologist.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of ALARA guidelines by strictly adhering to the Imaging Department’s Radiation Safety policies and procedures.

  • Position and instruct patient while utilizing protective shielding, immobilization, and supportive devices as required.

  • Determine and set appropriate technical parameters to accurately demonstrate anatomy and pathology.

  • Perform procedures as required based on physician’s order.

  • Perform a variety of diagnostic procedures (x-ray) to include but not limited to digital and mobile imaging as needed at applicable locations.

  • Administer contrast dye when necessary to enhance imaging.

  • Start I.V., load and operate power injector, and administer contrast media as directed and per protocol.

  • Completion of exam in hospital information system.

  • Cleaning and maintaining all imaging equipment.

  • May also assist with mentoring and/or training students, new hires.

Applicable imaging departments assume “on call” (CT Tech II) and holiday rotations on a regular basis. Imaging technologists are required to cover all outpatient and hospital locations as necessary and appropriate.

Education :

  • Completion of a Radiologic Technology Associate degree program or completion of CT technology certification program.

Experience :

  • Minimum one (1) year Radiologic Technology experience required.

  • Minimum one (1) year CT experience preferred.

Licensure/Certification :

  • ARRT(CT) certification required or registry eligible (if eligible, CT certification must be obtained within 24 months of hire/transfer date).

  • South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association (SCRQSA) required.

  • American Heart Association Healthcare provider course with Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required to be initially completed with the TH Organizational Development Office within 30 calendar days of hire date (exceptions to obtain certification from a provider other than the TH Organizational Development Office are approved by TH Organizational development on a case-by-case basis).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities :

Understand and utilize ALARA concepts and critical thinking, time management, effective communication, and proficiency in IV access for contrast media administration.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently (activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) required to stand, sit, and walk; occasionally (activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) to use hands, fingers; and frequently to talk or hear. The employee must exert 20 to 35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
