U.S. Air Force - Agency Wide AIRCRAFT MECHANIC HELPER in Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida

The primary purpose of this position is to perform developmental duties which are designed to orient the employee, who is serving in a trainee capacity, with applicable mechanical and evaluative skills and techniques at the helper (WG-05) grade level. The incumbent is required to complete developmental assignments and training outlined in an established training plan. Responsibilities WG-05 - Performs developmental assignments consisting of a series of specific and related tasks which have been selected to develop skills and orient the employee in the practical application of principle, concepts, and techniques of aircraft maintenance. - Under close supervision, learns to perform the more advanced work of the aircraft mechanic trade as a means of developing trade skills and gaining knowledge of the trade. - Uses and accounts for all hand and power tools and equipment, such as pneumatic wrenches, torque wrenches, speed wrenches, ratchet wrenches, end wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers. - Performs shop support work. Working with journey level aircraft mechanic as instructed, prepares record of actions taken on work order requests, preventive maintenance schedules, written instructions, etc., and obtains required coordination and signatures. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment. WG-08 -Removes major components of aircraft structure or systems such as control surfaces, fairing, access panels, doors, hatches, landing gear assemblies, engines, activator units, tubing, electrical wiring, and control cables. - Performs repairs of limited complexity such as removing worn or damaged gaskets, pneudraulic lines, and couplings, fuel cells, cables, and pulleys, determining when they may be cleaned and reinstalled, or must be replaced. - Works with higher grade mechanics to accomplish larger and more complex operations such as jacking and leveling aircraft, installing and adjusting engines, landing gear assemblies, instrument panels, and flight control systems. Uses test equipment, technical manuals, and follows approved maintenance procedures, obtaining assistance from higher grade mechanics when necessary. - Accomplishes operational and maintenance record keeping, both manual and automated, associated with aircraft maintenance and repair. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications This is a TERM Position Not to Exceed 36 Months. In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800, Aircraft Overhaul Group, Aircraft Mechanic. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: WG-05 1. Ability to follow directions, safety regulations, and procedures and work closely with others. 2. Ability to learn technical practices to select tools and carry out the aircraft mechanical work assigned. 3. Ability to learn to use and maintain hand and power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, torque wrenches, speed wrenches, ratchet wrenches, end wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers. 4. Ability to learn to read and use written instructions, standard specifications, mechanical drawings, and wiring diagrams to apply basic principles and practices related to aircraft maintenance. 5. Ability to learn to receive, validate, and store tools, equipment, and supplies. 6. Ability to learn to read and use blueprints, schematics, sketches, and technical orders. WG08 1. Knowledge of the operations and functions of a number aircraft components and parts, and the methods of removal and installation so that the parts and components are not damaged or misaligned. 2. Knowledge of a number of less complex aircraft systems, subsystems, and assemblies such as ejection seats, nuclear shielding, or similar self-contained systems. 3. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures. 4. Knowledge of operational and maintenance records, both manual and automated, and of the terminology and format to report work performed. 5. Skill in locating and correcting such problems as improper travel, or excessive friction or play between parts. 6. Skill in the care and use of hand and power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, speed wrenches, ratchet wrenches, and end wrenches, and the pattern of tightening and amount of torque to apply to assure a solid connection. Skill in the use of measuring instruments such as torque wrenches, micrometers, go-no-go gauges, multimeters,feeler gauges, and tensionmeters. Ability to recognize a variety of parts and components such as gaskets, couplings, control cables, gear boxes, and flight control surfaces, and when they may be cleaned and reinstalled, or must be replaced. Ability to read and understand specific directions including disassembly, assembly, and adjustment directions toreplace control cables and pulleys, lace in fuel bladders, and reinstall hydraulic lines, air ducts, and inspection plates. Physical Effort: The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Must climb, bend, stoop, crawl, and stand for prolonged periods on concrete or metal surfaces. Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh about 50 pounds with mechanical lifting devices or with assistance from other workers. Working Conditions: Work is performed in hanger areas, outdoors, in parked aircraft, and sometimes in hazardous noise areas. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, and inclement weather. Must work in confined areas and in awkward positions. Exposed to dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids, oil, hydraulic fluid, solvents, and hazardous fluids and gases, such as Hydrazine and Halon. Subject to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
