Position Summary/Description:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Hussman School of Journalism and Media invites applications from enthusiastic, collaborative, analytical, and user-centered individuals for the Director of Accreditation, Assessment and Program Review. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs, this position is responsible for providing leadership across a broad range of programs and initiatives to ensure appropriate evaluation, assessment, and planning in alignment with the school’s mission and in a spirit of informed decision making and continuous quality improvement.

The Director will lead schoolwide assessment, program review, and accreditation efforts that include: a) assessment of undergraduate student learning outcomes and curriculum; b) evaluation of the professional and graduate degree programs; c) data gathering, management and reporting related to assessment of student learning and program accreditation; d) coordination of internal university program review processes that do not require external agency accreditation; e) coordination of accreditation process (planning, assignment of tasks, data collection, writing and presentation) for external accrediting agency; and f) assessment of effectiveness and impact of school initiatives and programs. Through these initiatives, the Director will help the school fulfill its assessment and accreditation obligations, and make more informed decisions, better assess needs, set priorities, understand the impact of change, and implement initiatives more efficiently and effectively.

The school is currently on a six-year accreditation cycle with ACEJMC (external accrediting agency) that requires a multiyear process of data gathering and research. The director leads this schoolwide accreditation process, making sure that: documents are gathered; surveys are administered; tasks and responsibilities are assigned; deadlines are followed; projects are completed; and reports are written.

The Director will model a collaborative and coordinated approach to assessment of programs and student learning, which involves outreach to internal and external stakeholders involved in the process, as well as collecting internal data from different sources, conducting student and employer surveys, and other actions necessary to retrieve the information. The Director will serve as the school liaison to all university offices involved in collecting data pertinent to assessment of student learning and programs and will be in charge of reporting data from the school on an annual basis. The Director is also responsible for ensuring a closed-loop process whereby appropriate data are collected and applied to inform decision making about school programs, curriculum, practices and initiatives.

The Director will work with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs, school curriculum committee and the university Center for Faculty Excellence to understand student learning and faculty teaching needs, and to promote continuous quality improvement consistent with the UNC Hussman academic mission. The Director will develop and lead a comprehensive assessment system centered on a culture of evidence of student learning outcomes in all professional and academic programs. The incumbent will lead schoolwide programing to design and execute data collection, analysis, and reporting related to student learning and student success initiatives. The Director will serve as liaison to the directors of degree programs and academic initiatives for fostering timely and ongoing communication, sharing, and development of best practices in academic and student services across the school.

Education and Experience:

Essential Skills:

  • Well-developed statistical skills and analytical abilities; demonstrated proficiency in data analytics and managing data both with statistical packages/programming languages, databases, and presentation software applications.
