Craven County Government Maintenance Technician III (10326) in New Bern, North Carolina

Primary Purpose

Performs skilled work in the maintenance of buildings, mechanical equipment, building operational systems, grounds and facilities. Performs lead worker duties on assigned projects and recurring maintenance tasks.

Essential Functions
  • Performs journeyman level skilled maintenance and repair work in one or more of the maintenance trades such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, refrigeration, pneumatics, hydraulics, and environmental control systems.
  • Performs general carpentry work in the construction, repair or alteration of floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens, and various other wooden articles.
  • Replaces faulty bulbs, switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, ballasts, control transformers, sensors, and other parts of electrical systems.
  • Hangs sheetrock, sands, paints or stains walls, woodwork, cabinets, tables and other articles.
  • Repairs water and sanitary fixtures and equipment; analyzes defects or malfunctions in plumbing systems; repairs leaks by replacing valves, replacing faulty fittings or sections in line, or installing replacement fixtures.
  • Repairs small areas of concrete, brick, stone, and asphalt. Performs general maintenance on HVAC systems, ice makers, coolers, and freezers.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and general repair of pneumatic control systems and hydraulics.
  • Performs general maintenance on Fire control, detection and suppression systems. Repairs, replaces, and maintains CCTV camera and access control equipment.
  • May supervise or provide lead worker duties for a small crew on an assigned task.
  • Purchases various maintenance supplies as needed. Maintains cleanliness of shop, work truck, and other work areas.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduation from high school. Considerable experience in construction or building maintenance trades, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Certification or Licenses in at least one of the fields of carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, refrigeration, pneumatics, hydraulics, and environmental control systems trades.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge and experience of the procedures, materials and equipment related to the carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, refrigeration, pneumatics, hydraulics, and environmental control systems trades. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the maintenance trades involved in the work. Considerable knowledge of basic grounds keeping practices and procedures. Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools necessary in performing mechanical, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and building repair/ maintenance work. Knowledge and experience with personal computers and a thorough understanding of computer interactions as it pertains to access control, cctv, security, fire control, and environmental management systems. Ability to physically operate a variety of equipment including mechanic tools, carpentry tools, electrical tools, plumbing tools, welding equipment, painting equipment, etc. Ability to read and understand electrical schematics. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications. Ability to operate personal computers and various software programs that control or operate different building management systems. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions. Ability to supervise the work of semi-skilled and unskilled workers. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. Ability to communicate using cellphone and/or a two-way hand-held radio. Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.

Additional Information

Additional Job Functions: Performs related work as required. May perform various landscaping duties during special circumstances and/or assist the Grounds Maintenance Department, when necessary, with duties such as mowing, edging, mulching, tree removal, snow or debris removal, etc. After hours work or emergency work may affect schedule as required. May be required to serve during times of disaster.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must have visual acuity to operate hand and power tools, perform visual inspections involving small objects, use measurement devices and assemble or fabricate parts and equipment, operate trucks and medium to heavy equipment.
