Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks a dynamic team leader to serve as the next Career Counseling Officer (operational title: Senior Assistant Director) overseeing the International Student Career Pathways Initiative within the Office of Career Exploration and Success. Reporting to the Associate Director for Career Pathways, this role ensures international students can successfully navigate the job search process, connect with employers, and access meaningful career opportunities. The Senior Assistant Director will develop career programs that highlight many international students' global perspectives, multilingual abilities, and cross-cultural competencies while addressing key challenges such as understanding work authorization, identifying employers that value international talent, adapting to U.S. hiring practices, and leveraging professional networks. This role requires strategic decision-making, initiative development, and cross-campus collaboration to expand career access and employer engagement efforts.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Program Leadership & Initiative Management - Oversee the International Student Career Pathways Initiative, a strategic effort to expand career access for international students. Develop career programs that help students explore career pathways, build career competencies, and connect with professionals. This includes working with campus partners as International Student Career Pathway Fellows, coordinating a signature career event, and launching a Friends of Rutgers virtual student-alumni mentoring program.
  • Community Engagement & Advisory Board Leadership - Lead the International Student Career Pathways Community Advisory Board, engaging faculty, staff, employers, and student leaders to expand career resources and employment opportunities. Serve as a key liaison to student organizations and campus partners that support international students, including Rutgers Global - International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), academic departments, and student organizations. Serve as the primary contact for career presentation requests from international student organizations and campus stakeholders.
  • Career Advising & Preparation - Provide individual and group career advising that helps international students build confidence, refine their career narratives, and develop job search strategies that align with employer expectations. Guide students in identifying global and U.S.-based employers, effectively communicating work authorization, adapting to different hiring practices, and maximizing professional connections.
  • Employer & Alumni Engagement - Establish partnerships with employers and alumni to expand hiring pathways for international students, advocate for inclusive recruitment practices, and develop employer education programs that address work authorization considerations and global hiring strategies.
  • Strategic Leadership & Professional Development - Represent Rutgers in career development initiatives, contribute to national conversations through conference presentations, and support recognition efforts that highlight the university's leadership in international student career development.
  • Additional Responsibilities - Actively participate in meetings, professional development opportunities, and collaborative initiatives that advance the mission of Career Exploration and Success. Contribute to elevating Rutgers University's reputation as a leader in global career development by engaging in industry communities and supporting award nominations and recognition efforts.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in career services, workforce development, student success programming, or a related field.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong student-focused orientation with experience designing career programs and initiatives.
  • Ability to develop programming that helps students navigate job search challenges such as understanding work authorization, employer research, adapting to U.S. hiring practices, and professional self-advocacy.
  • Strong decision-making skills related to program development, employer engagement, and student success initiatives.
  • Experience with public speaking, workshop facilitation, and advising.
  • The ability to lead these efforts with confidence and operate autonomously.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and adapt to change in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree.
  • Experience within a career services or higher education working with international students.
Equipment Utilized
  • Career assessments and online career planning tools (e.g., Going Global, FOCUS2, Vault, VR Mock Interview).
  • Handshake or similar career management systems.
  • Standard office software (Microsoft Office, Google Suite, etc.).
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be willing and available to work some nights and weekends.
