We are looking to fill a specialist position to run the logistics of a large USDA-funded field research project on forestry and native bee species at research sites in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. In the off-season, the specialist will work in the Winfree lab at Rutgers University to identify the collected bee specimens and process DNA samples from pollen for barcoding identification. The position is full-time with flexible hours but requires highly specialized research skills and willingness to work at remote field sites for part of the year. The selected individual will 1) develop experimental design of field research, including bee monitoring techniques and logistics, 2) coordinate with public and private landowners where research takes place, including submission of research permits, and 3) process molecular data from pollen samples and identify bee species. Competitive applicants will have substantial experience organizing and running large-scale field experiments as well as high-level skills in bee species identification and knowledge of next generation sequencing techniques.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
PhD in ecology or related field such as entomology, natural resources, or organismal biology. Five or more years of experience designing and conducting large scale bee monitoring, including field collection techniques and in-lab processing.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of bee taxonomy (can identify many eastern North American bees to the species level). Experience using PCR, TapeStation, Qubit, and familiarity with pollen metabarcoding techniques. Experience managing logistics for large field research projects, including landowner relations with private and public agencies and research permitting. Drivers' license and abilty to travel frequently to field sites in northeastern states. Ability to contribute to pollen DNA data analysis and/or research publications.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Requires physical ability to walk carrying equipment to work at remote forested field sites; stamina for long hours outdoors at times in inclement weather; ability to travel using personal vehicle throughout northeastern states. Must be able to stand for long periods.
