Description

The Pei Lab at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health is seeking an Associate Research Scientist with expertise in the field of infectious disease modeling, data analytics, complex systems, and computational methods in public health research.

The Associate Research Scientist will work on projects focusing on human behavior and modeling of respiratory diseases such as COVID-19 and influenza, with applications to disease surveillance, forecasting and control. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a quantitative field including but not limited to applied math, physics, statistics, epidemiology, data science and computer science. Strong programming skills (R, MATLAB, or Python) and good oral and written communication skills are required. Previous experience with mathematical modeling of infectious diseases and/or data science is required. The ability to perform research independently is a plus. The Associate Research Scientist will work in the research group of Dr. Sen Pei based within Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York City and join an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in behavior science, infectious disease modeling, Bayesian inference, network science and data science. Competitive salary including full benefits will be provided commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design, implement and validate mathematical models for infectious diseases (60%)
  • Analyze human behavior data and other data sources to inform infectious disease modeling (25%)
  • Prepare, submit and revise manuscripts and research reports (10%)
  • Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested. (5%)
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A PhD in a quantitative field including but not limited to applied math, physics, statistics, epidemiology, data science and computer science.
  • Strong programming skills and good oral and written communication skills are required.
  • At least one-year postdoc experience in infectious disease modeling and data analysis.
  • Experience working with real-world data is required.
  • Ability to complete all training and certification in compliance with the policies of the Columbia University and federal and state regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

A strong publication record on mathematical modeling of infectious diseases and/or data science is highly preferred. The ability to perform research independently is a plus.
