The Role

Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.

This position is for an electrical engineer in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83) supporting the maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of CVN68 Class aircraft carriers. The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for supporting engineering efforts associated with the Reactor Plant Instrumentation and Controls including design, maintenance, and troubleshooting. The candidate should be capable of applying technical expertise to develop solutions to complex problems for electrical equipment. Responsibilities include project management, design, manufacturing oversight, qualification testing, technical analysis, deviation resolution, and technical leadership. Shipboard visits may be necessary for problem resolution and may involve access to radiological areas.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

In addition, the candidate should have the following:

  • A working understanding of reactor plant systems and governing design documents.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and design electrical schematics.

  • Strong project management, organizational, and computer skills (proficient with Microsoft Office products).

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write technical documents clearly, accurately, and with technical rigor.

  • The ability to work independently, with a strong sense of initiative.

  • The ability to interface with a variety of organizations, including vendors, government representatives, and shipyard engineering to develop, install, test, and troubleshoot electrical equipment.

  • A working knowledge of Navy logistics, and a basic knowledge and prior experience with 3‐D modeling and drafting programs, such as AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor, would also be beneficial.
