City of Newport News LICENSED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN (FULL-TIME) in Newport News, Virginia

What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do

? If you have a passion for helping and caring for animals, look no further - this may be the position for you! A typical day for a Licensed Veterinary Technician in the Parks and Recreation Department will vary depending on intake volume and shelter needs. On a daily basis, you will be responsible for performing routine medical evaluations and diagnostic procedures to include radiographs, collecting blood, urine or stool samples and preparing animals for surgery. You would provide nursing care or emergency first aid to injured or recovering animals to include administering anesthesia or assisting with euthanasia when necessary. This position would train other shelter staff in proper observation and diagnostic methods to also include animal handling techniques. You would maintain daily logs, prepare reports, respond to inquiries, maintain inventory supplies and establish maintenance schedules for hospital equipment.

How much money can I make?

In this position, you could make a competitive salary ranging from $50K - $58K depending on experience.

What are the qualifications for this position?

Requires an Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field and 3 years of professional veterinary technician or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position will also require satisfactory results from local and state criminal background check and sex offender registry check and a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record. This position requires pre-employment medical evaluation and substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. Must possess and maintain a current Veterinary Technician license from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
