City of Nome Accounting Clerk in Nome, Alaska

Summary:

Under the supervision and guidance of the Finance Director or his/her designee, performs routine clerical work such as computer data entry, copying, scanning documents to electronic files, filing reports, answering telephone calls, and provides additional administrative support to City Hall offices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Provides clerical support to the City Clerks Office, City Managers Office and Finance Office. Performs front counter work; receives payments for taxes, licenses, permits, fees and bills; refers to fee schedules and computes monies due. Assists in printing, organizing, and processing accounts payable and payroll checks. Maintains files of records; scans, faxes, or archives records; enters and updates information into databases. Maintains filing and indexing systems for active, transient and archival records. Prepares labels and envelopes for mailing, receiving, sorting and distribution of incoming mail. Operates standard office equipment including: multi-line phone, personal computer, copier, scanner, postage machine and shredder. Answers telephone and routes calls to appropriate person or takes messages as required. Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Exercised: Supervision of regular employees is not a normal responsibility of this position.

Education and/or Experience: At least 18 years of age with reasonable responsibility and education sufficient to receive and comprehend instructions. Proficiency in the use of office machinery and Microsoft Office applications is desired but not required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to comprehend and follow comprehensive instructions. Ability to perform delegated administrative assignments with direct or limited supervision; handle with courtesy and tact a wide variety of public contact both on the telephone and in person; understand and carry out oral and written directions; work cooperatively with others; proficiently use the computer system. Must have a high level of initiative and be able to work with direct or limited supervision; be able to learn, apply, and retain knowledge of skills required for the position. The ability to maintain confidentiality is mandatory.

Language Skills: The ability to read and write English and to comprehend instructions is required. Ability to compose general correspondence, take notes at meetings and maintain records per policy and procedure.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematics: add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.
