STEP-UP, INC. Employment Training Specialist in Norfolk, Virginia

EMPLOYMENT and TRAINING SPECIALIST Reports to: Executive Director

Coordinates with other Employment and Training Specialists, Case Managers, Instructors, Virginia Employment Commission, Workforce Development Virginia State Probation and Parole, Department of Social Services, Housing Organizations and Other Supportive groups.

Summary ofPrimary Duties: A. Conduct intake and assessment of returning citizens. B. Provide appropriate community resources and referrals. C. Conduct interviews with returning citizens to assess their skills and qualifications. D. Develop and deliver training programs to enhance job readiness and employable skills. E. Assist with resume development, cover preparation and online job applications F. Collaborate with employers to understand their hiring needs and match qualified candidates to their job (review offenses that some employers will take and not accept in their employ). G. Attend reentry council meetings and training that occur both in person and on Zoom. H. Facilitate in-person and Zoom pre-release classes that will be held in local, regional, and state institutions. The classes will be based on our thirteen-week curriculum. I. Conduct outreach activities to recruit potential clients. J. Maintain accurate records of all client contacts, activities, and progress by using the STEP-UP database to record and document. K. Follow-up on all returning citizens on a regular basis for up to two years to see their status and to provide additional services and support where needed. L. Prepare reports monthly and quarterly on time through the use of the STEP-UP database.

Subsidiary Activities:All activities will be coordinated with the Executive Director and in the absence of the Executive Director with the Assistant Director. Job Requirements: The Employment and Training Specialist will devote 100% (Full-time) to the operation of the contract which they are representing. Any specific appointments to reentry board(s) or committees will be approved by the Executive Director. The Employment and Training Specialist should be available to attend meetings which might occur before or after the regular workday and if necessary, to attend meetings, conferences or training on weekends. In addition, some of the meetings may require overnight stays out of area. The specialist may be assigned other duties by the Executive Director or Assistant Director as deemed necessary to carry out an effective program.

Minimum Education Requirements/Other Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent in a related field of study
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively interview and assess returning citizens.
  • Knowledge of employment and state laws regarding former offender
  • Experience in mentoring or coaching individuals preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Must have own transportation.
