Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse the SR SURGICAL TECH assists in the care and preparation of the surgical patient in accordance with individual needs physician orders Hospital policy and standards of patient care. In addition the SR SURGICAL TECH functions in three or more areas of specialization.

Responsibilities
Adheres to established Hospital/departmental policies and procedures, objectives, Quality Assessment and Improvement Program, Infection Assessment and Improvement Program, legal, safety, environment control standards and Patient's Bill of Rights.
Identifies and prepares appropriate instrumentation, supplies and equipment based on identified surgical procedures and respects time out and sponge accounting standards.
Demonstrates responsibility in following the doctor's preference card (DCP) and utilizing materials and supplies accordingly with minimal of waste.
Works with the surgical team during operating procedures within scope of practice and adheres to principles of aseptic technique and monitors others.
Ensures all instruments, equipment and supplies are accounted for after each case; removes equipment requiring repair from service and tags and submits to front desk for bio med and/or to SPD supervisor.
Demonstrates an understanding of organizational structure and utilizes appropriate channels of communication.
Understands and participates actively in time out procedures at the direction of the registered nurse.
Demonstrates a positive cooperative manner when dealing with all members of the health care team, is directly responsive to the oversight of patient care provided by the registered nurse in conjunction with the surgeon and anesthesiologist.
Passes instruments, supplies, medications, equipment and implants to the surgeon during procedure and demonstrates ability to handle unexpected and emergent situations in dealing with changing patient care needs.
Demonstrates knowledge of the procedure to anticipate surgeon needs.
Engages with leadership through participating in or leading department quality improvement projects.
Partners with the RN circulator to monitor compliance with standards.
Attends all mandatory training met per department guidelines for established deadlines.
May be required to respond to on-call for department needs, being readily available for urgent and emergent on-call cases per department need and schedule.
Precepts and role models in area(s) of expertise for new Surgical Technicians and/or other department employees and/or students.
Participates in a supportive and collaborative work environment, conducive to learning and empowerment of staff.
Collaborates with unit management and other licensed staff to identify career and educational needs for staff and self.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of operating room experience in an acute care setting required with at least three (3) years in an area of specialty required.
Must be able to scrub Neuro Vascular Ortho and Spine cases.
Open Heart procedures preferred.
Successful completion of an accredited/approved Surgical Technician program required.
Current AHA BLS card required.
National Board Surgical Technician (CT ST) certification required.
LA County Fire Card required.

Pay Range
$36.00 - $45.00 /hour
