Description of Work

Position is based in the Jacksonville Resident Engineer’s office and may also assist in the Jacksonville District office which serves Onslow and Pender Counties.

As a lead project inspector/lead surveyor in the Resident’s office, this position will support engineers in the daily administration of construction projects including: urban widening, new alignment roadway, bridge construction (girder and cored slab bridge), utility construction, and signal construction and should have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and related construction methods, materials and equipment. The position will be responsible for highway construction stakeout, surveying, and inspection of highway construction projects monitoring project work and material to ensure conformance to specifications and contractual provisions. Applicant should have advanced skills in roadway drafting/design; considerable knowledge of mathematical functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry and skilled in the use of computers and calculators. The position will supervise and train lower-level technicians including Department employees as well as Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) staff, ensuring adequate inspection personnel are assigned for active projects.

District Office duties will include the review of driveway permits, encroachment agreements, subdivision plans, and road additions and perform field inspections for compliance to NCDOT specifications for driveway permits, encroachments and subdivision.

Applicant must be proficient at plan reading, highway engineering calculations, and use of survey instruments necessary to supervise the stake-out of line grade for roadways and structures. Duties include preparation of monthly estimates, final estimates, written and oral communication with contractors, inspection personnel, utility companies and general public to ensure compliance with contract plans, standards, and specifications. Work will involve wide range of decision making and use of judgement. This position is subject to work nights and weekends as needed in the performance of duties. Applicant should be able to communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractor personnel and the general public. Applicant must have the ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties.

Minimal supervision from Resident and District Engineers.

Safety toe shoes required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight (8) years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
