Job Summary
This position is FLSA nonexempt (full-time).
Under direct supervision, attend and successfully complete a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified basic police academy, receiving closely supervised training in: laws and codes; criminal justice system procedures; law enforcement and crime prevention techniques; officer safety; first aid; physical fitness and defensive tactics; handling and operation of emergency vehicles, firearms and equipment; radio codes and dispatching procedures; public contact skills, communication and interviewing; writing and editing police reports; investigation techniques; suspect contact, arrest and handling procedures; ethics; evidence collection and preservation; court testimony; and departmental rules and regulations.
The position works under direct supervision according to some procedures; decides how and when to complete tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Under close supervision, this position attends a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified police academy, participating in and passing all required classes.
To be considered for an entry-level position, the following requirements must be met:
- Requires high school diploma or GED.
- Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must possess a valid Alabama driver's license or obtain one upon appointment.
- Must have a clear criminal record.
- Must not have been dishonorably discharged from the armed forces.
- Take a Physical Agility Test consisting of performing 22 pushups in one minute, 25 sit-ups in one minute, run 1.5 miles in less than 15 minutes and 28 second, scale a 6 ft fence, walk 5 yards on a balance beam, push a car 15 ft, drag a dummy weighing 165 lbs 5 feet, and be able to crawl through a 2x2 window opening.
- Must undergo a full background check including a POLYGRAPH TEST.
- Must pass a post offer medical examination
- Must undergo testing for illegal substances.
Essential Job Functions
- Attends P.O.S.T. certified basic academy, participating in and passing all required classes.
- During training develops awareness and understanding of the functions and responsibilities of Police Officers.
- Must pass firearms training and must learn proper handling and firing of firearms;
- Must study and learn radio codes and applicable Penal Code sections;
- Must learn an overview of the court system and proper testifying techniques;
- Must study and become proficient in writing and editing police reports;
Observing law enforcement activities such as maintenance of order, crime prevention, and protection of citizens and property;
Must review and learn departmental rules, regulations, and procedures;
Must learn and must become competent in arrest and control technique.
Successfully learns to serves legal documents such as subpoenas or misdemeanor or felony warrants; assists with traffic control for funeral processions; transports prison inmates, paperwork, and animals as required; assists with fire and rescue calls.
Successfully learns to provide safe and convenient flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic within the community; investigates traffic accidents; enforces traffic laws; reports unsafe road conditions to appropriate personnel; and conducts DUI/speeding checks.
Successfully learns to issues civil or legal documents such as traffic citations; prepares forms and other documents as required; testifies in civil and criminal court proceedings or gives depositions.
Communicates and exchanges information with others to complete required paperwork and prepares routine and special reports in compliance with departmental standards.
Maintains equipment of responsibility; performs errands and other non-essential tasks not related to law enforcement as directed.
Attends in-service training and technical or professional classes or seminars to improve t chnical and professional skills and maintain required certification.
