Microsoft Corporation Principal Technical Governance Mechanical Engineer in Phoenix, Arizona

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud.  Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a Principal Technical Governance Mechanical Engineer to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services. 

The successful candidate will fulfill a technical role for Microsoft as a global datacenter mechanical subject matter expert (SME). This role will involve supporting Microsoft’s datacenter Technical Excellence program and projects globally. The successful candidate will be required to set and provide global technical direction for internal DCE mechanical subject matter experts (SME) and external consultants. This role will require broad knowledge of datacenter cooling equipment, associated cooling strategies, and overall topology for Microsoft’s global fleet of datacenters.

This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.

Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates will need to relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.

This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to (50)%.

Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will be a Principal Technical Governance Mechanical Engineer with expertise in datacenter mechanical systems. The successful candidate will be a team player able to support a multi-disciplined group designing Microsoft Datacenters globally, have an in-depth understanding of datacenter cooling technologies, large cooling plant and distribution system design, and detailed knowledge of PUE and WUE models.

Additional responsibilities will require the candidate to:

  • Provide consistent and strong leadership with excellent communication skills.

  • Manage multiple, concurrent initiatives with minimal oversight.

  • Support weekly Mechanical SME meetings with deployment teams to set direction and align priorities.

  • Develop presentations and communicate frequently with senior leadership​ on strategic direction and technical subject matter.

  • Develop and continually improve existing processes, procedures, and documentation.

  • Work cross functionally with multiple stakeholders to deliver and continually improve Microsoft’s overall Mechanical design approach.

  • Work effectively with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and facilitate cross-group collaboration and stakeholder alignment.

  • Exhibit personal integrity with a methodical and detail-oriented work ethic.

  • Exercise sound engineering judgement to develop first of kind and innovative datacenter cooling solutions from inception to deployment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years’ experience designing complex mechanical engineering systems in datacenters.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check : This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualificaitons:

  • Management of internal customer requirements and design.

  • Deep understanding of HVAC load calculations and psychometrics.

  • Excellent knowledge of industry standards, building codes and regulations.

  • Ability to perform equipment reviews including factory witness testing.

  • Ability to lead teams of internal and external engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments.

  • Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and maintain high quality standards, including technical report writing.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

  • Ability to present using the MS office suite; MS word, MS excel and MS PowerPoint.

  • AutoCAD, REVIT & BIM knowledge.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
