Reference #: 2022455 We are searching for an Assistant Director of Community Engagement to join the newly founded Office of Community Engagement and Leadership Development. Positioned within the Division of Students Affairs, the creation of this new department is the next chapter in the university's commitment to societal impact as we work towards our ambitious goal of ensuring every student has a foundational community engagement experience as part of their Carnegie Mellon education. Building off an endowed Directorship in 2019, followed by the opening of a university-wide community engagement collaboration space in 2022, the Office of Community Engagement and Leadership Development team will have the exciting opportunity to co-create the strategic priorities and approaches to further invest in student development and learning and community impact.

The department consists of experienced professionals and graduate student(s) with an outstanding ability to: cultivate relevant, one-to-one mentoring relationships with exceptional students; deeply influence the growth and development of the leaders of tomorrow; craft unique experiences building on the talents of a diverse, dynamic community; and contribute to our Student Affairs Division whose cornerstone is a deep, sustained commitment to the ongoing care of its students, including through the department's direct work of addressing food insecurity on campus.

In addition to collaborating with Division of Student Affairs colleagues, you will have the opportunity to complement and amplify community engagement, community-engaged learning, and outreach efforts occurring across campus. Partnering with community organizations to understand and address community-identified needs will be essential in your role.

Core Responsibilities will include:

Supporting strategic planning efforts for the department

Integrating and expanding community engagement efforts throughout the student experience

Supervising the full-time Program Coordinator for Basic Needs and Community Initiatives, including providing continuity of service for all basic needs programs

Providing operational support and oversight for the Nexus of Civic Engagement including through supervision of the Nexus Ambassadors

Developing and delivering programming in the Nexus and actively seeking campus and community partnerships to achieve desired usage of the space

Supervising community engagement student staff in their delivery of direct service opportunities, educational programming, and annual events

Championing alternative break experiences through the advising of alternative break student organizations, oversight of the related scholarship process, and coordination of the Pittsburgh Alternative Break program

Planning large-scale community engagement events such as Days of Service and Volunteer Fair(s)

Implementing the democratic engagement strategic plan

Advising community engagement student organizations

Supporting other community engagement initiatives including trainings, annual events, the blood drive program, and disaster relief response

Assessing and iterating on departmental community engagement initiatives and partnerships

Contributing to campus, community, and professional networks

Acting as a departmental representative to internal and external stakeholders

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Master's degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs, Non-Profit Management, Community Development, or related field required.

1-3 years of related experience in a student affairs, community organization, or non-profit etting required

A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
