UPMC Casual Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician (10S) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

UPMC Montefiore is actively hiring a Casual Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician to work on our Acute Medicine unit, 10S!

What is a Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician?

  • Nursing Assistants and Patient Care Technicians play a vital role in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care while supporting essential department services in line with established policies and procedures. Working closely under the guidance of nurses and physicians, they contribute to maintaining the highest standards of patient care. Their responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks, including assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, and repositioning patients, as well as monitoring blood glucose levels and vital signs. In addition, they perform critical clinical functions like simple wound care, EKGs, bladder scans, and specimen collection. Their work ensures a seamless and high-quality experience for patients throughout their care journey.

  • The Nursing Assistant and Patient Care Technician roles are integral positions in the UPMC nursing support career ladder, offering opportunities for growth and advancement. Title and compensation will be based on education and experience.

What is 10S?

  • 10 South at UPMC Montefiore is a 30-bed acuity-adaptable medical unit specializing in stepdown and telemetry care. We handle a broad spectrum of general medical cases and also manage overflow from orthopedics, ENT, hepatology, urology, and abdominal transplant services. This collaborative, team-oriented unit provides care for a diverse patient population with varying levels of acuity, making it an excellent environment to enhance one's inpatient experience and clinical expertise.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with patient care (daily activities, procedures, and therapies) and report patient status to the RN.

  • Carry out essential nursing assistant duties (such as taking vital signs, monitoring blood glucose, and providing Foley care) along with other tasks (including phlebotomy, EKGs, and IV catheter removal).

  • Report equipment issues, maintain communication with departments, and foster professional relationships.

  • Contribute to unit tasks (e.g., call lights, transporting patients, passing meals).

  • Accept feedback, improve skills, and participate in self-reviews.

  • Educate patients and families under RN supervision and assist with restraints as needed.

  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team, follow safety protocols, and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.

  • Adhere to policies and procedures, including infection control, and document accurately.

  • Support department projects and quality initiatives.

  • Perform advanced skills (e.g., phlebotomy, IV removal, EKG) as needed.

Training:

  • All hired candidates will complete a mandatory training course. This is a paid training program that spans over two weeks. The main program is on weekdays only and during daylight hours, combining virtual and in-person days. Attendance is mandatory for the entire training. A one-day training is available on Saturdays for those who have completed a clinical rotation in a hospital or have specific transferable in-patient/hospital experience.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must also have either:

  • Year of general healthcare experience

  • 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion

  • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field

  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.

  • Successful completion of basic information system training.

  • Microcomputer experience preferred.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLS preferred.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
