UPMC is seeking a dedicated Histotechnician or Histotechnologist to join our dynamic Histology Lab team. This full-time position is perfect for someone passionate about contributing to life-changing medicine in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Position Details:

  • Shift: Evening shifts 10 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Monday through Friday.

  • Location: Clinical Lab Building in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, near UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

  • Applicants will be placed in the appropriate role (Histotechnician or Histotechnologist) and salary level based on experience and education.

  • The Histotechnologist role starts at $24.32 per hour .

UPMC is currently offering a generous sign-on bonus of up to $15,000 for Histotechnicians and Histotechnologists!

Responsibilities:

  • Understands CoPath related to Histology workflow.

  • Progresses towards working independently in an advanced staining area.

  • Performs QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining

  • Processes and prepares surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping.

  • Embeds and cuts specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.

  • Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts, or floaters.

  • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.

  • Maintains instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.

  • Performs additional tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

Histotechnician:

  • High school diploma.

  • Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam:

  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR;

  • Associate's degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.

  • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.

Histotechnologist:

  • Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP):

  • B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years OR;

  • B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one-year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years.

  • Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board-certified medical scientist.

  • 1 year of full-time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Am Society Clinical Pathology Histology Technician (HT) certification from ASCP is required within 18 months of hire.

  • Employees active in a Histotechnician position, on or before the effective date 1/1/2004, at a healthcare facility, are grandfathered regarding certification and will not need to obtain it unless they move into a different position that would require certification.
