Job Description:

The Scientist, Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC) Engineer will be responsible for designing the vehicle guidance algorithms, navigation algorithms and vehicle control schemes. Using first-principles thinking, GNC engineers use a foundational understanding of physics combined with multi-disciplinary experience to develop and evaluate system capability to help automomous unmanned vehicles achieve their mission objectives. GNC Engineers are responsible for simulation and software development, implementation, testing, and analysis to support a variety of vehicle types and configurations. At the Scientist level, GNC engineers are also responsible for providing subject matter expertise to multiple programs and mentoring.

The Agile Development Group specializes in developing disruptive, next-generation technologies for advanced Unmanned Air Systems / Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAS / UAV), advanced radar systems, next-generation weapon systems, and other RF sensor technologies using small company agility and big company experience.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop GNC Design Architecture and Technical Roadmap for Program Planning and Execution

  • Lead simulation/software development and manage task delegation to team members, as needed

  • Develop dynamic vehicle aerodynamic, propulsion, and hardware/sensor models

  • Develop guidance algorithms to provide mission capability

  • Design and tune controllers for vehicle stability and control

  • Integrate a suite of sensor feedback for Navigation and Track State Estimation development

  • Evaluate system performance, capabilities, and sensitivities using a variety of methods

  • Lead root-cause failure identification and resolution studies

  • Create and deliver design/results presentations for internal and external customers

  • Support growth of GNC Functional Organization through creation of technical/process resources

  • Provide GNC subject matter expertise across multiple programs

  • Mentor and guide GNC team members

  • Proposal support including defining the GNC related task’s technical scope, cost and schedule

  • Ability to obtain and maintain any additional clearances as required

  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds

  • Up to 10% travel may be required

  • Other duties as required

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 16 years of prior related experience.

  • Active DoD secret clearance

  • Demonstrated technical expertise in GNC disciplines including Guidance, Navigation, Control Theory, Target State Estimation, Vehicle Modeling

  • Demonstrated experience integrating and testing with a variety of mission sensors (radar, optical, etc) used for vehicle stabilization and feedback control

  • Demonstrated technical Program Development leadership including planning and creation of development roadmaps, program execution, delegation of tasks, and verifying engineering rigor

  • Demonstrated expertise creating GNC development processes

    Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering

  • Experience with and an understanding of aerospace systems, especially in the development of integrated hardware/software products

  • Excellent technical, problem solving, and math skills

  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink, C/C+

    • Excellent people skills, with experience leading and collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, & presentation) including the ability to translate technical vision, direction, tasking, and status to muti-disciplinary team

  • Experience using Microsoft Office products
