The Opportunity

As a dedicated Software Engineer Intermediate, you will provide support to the Enterprise by delivering best-in-class technology solutions for an application development team primarily focused on Java, REST APIs, and JavaScript technologies. You will engage in all phases of the software system and application development lifecycle which include gathering and analyzing requirements (both functional and non-functional), designing, testing, documenting, software implementation and responding to outages.

To fully deliver these imperatives, we have developed technical training curriculum to establish base-level knowledge essential to software development standards and practices used within application development teams at USAA. After successfully completing the training curriculum, you will be assigned to an application development team.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position will be based in one of the following location: Plano, TX. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:

  • Design, develop, code, and test technical solutions

  • Write code to deliver features, and improvements, on a regular basis

  • Investigates and resolve technical problems and production issues through troubleshooting techniques

  • Continually improves operations by conducting systems analysis and recommending changes in policies and procedures.

  • Prepares and installs solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming.

  • Follows the software development lifecycle.

  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 4 additional years of experience beyond the minimum requirement can be used in lieu of a degree ORApproved certification from CodeUp, Galvanize, VetFIT (Veterans for IT) or eFIT (Employees for IT).

  • 2 years of software development experience specific to a discipline/technology.

  • 1 year of experience delivering technology solutions in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle.

  • Basic Understanding of one or more of the following: Java, Swift, Objective-C, Cobol, JavaScript, Kotlin, C++, HTML, CSS, SQL

  • Knowledge and understanding of troubleshooting applications and systems within production issues.

  • Ability to quickly understand applicable business acumen to provide appropriate Engineering solutions

  • Ability to effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions.

  • Basic understanding of cloud technologies and tools.

What sets you apart:

  • Experience in REST frameworks with focus on API development

  • Experience with AGILE methodology (Scrum, Lean, SAFe, etc.)

  • Experience building APIs with Spring Boot

  • Ability to design and implement container-based APIs using Docker

  • Experience with container orchestration tools like Kubernetes or OpenShift

  • Working experience with build frame frameworks such as Gradle or Maven, Software Version control systems based on GIT and CI/CD frameworks based on GitLab CI

  • Experience with test-driven development and automated testing frameworks

  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner

What we offer:

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $74,210.00 - $141,830.00 .

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
