Summary Under the guidance and support of the Automation Manager, the Controls Engineer is responsible for a variety of tasks relating to PLC, HMI, SCADA, VFD’s, digital, analog, and plant integrated control systems. These tasks include, but are not limited to, repair & maintenance, programming, troubleshooting, ordering parts, and budgeting. Responsible for contributing to driving continuous improvement in Safety, Quality, Delivery and/or Productivity.
Duties and Responsibilities
Work efficiently and safely to ensure that the internal customers will produce a high quality product
Ensure all equipment is running within specifications and take corrective action as necessary
Meet all internal customers’ needs while maintaining high levels of safety and quality. As a part of the maintenance group, the Controls Engineer will do his part to meet Emmi Roth budget levels.
Maintain the PLC infrastructure with respect to completing new projects, preventive maintenance requirements and system updates in a timely manner
Observe mechanical devices in operation; listening for problems; using precision measuring and testing instruments.
Complete electrical repair involving motors (AC, DC, Multi –Phase), controls and other electrical equipment
Complete reasonable job layouts and ordering of materials necessary to complete job
Accurately complete work orders and PM’s in Maintenance Connect
Draft and review technical drawings, blueprints, schematics or specifications for electrical control panels using AutoCAD software
Generate required bill of materials for panels
Assemble control panels
Install panels, cable tray, wiring, poly-tubing and sensors
Documentation for all I/O for the current panels
Assist in all start-up and commissioning phases
Maintain clean and organized work area
Identify and implement cost savings, improvement, and safety measure to boost overall performance and proficiency
Actively participate on EOE Teams that improve workplace safety, reduce waste and improve factory efficiencies
Participate in analyzing occupational hazards and preventing potential risks
Alert the Automation Manager when there is a deviation from quality, safety, food safety, or Emmi Roth policies and standards
Attend staff and department meetings
May be required to work overtime if deemed necessary with occasional weekend work
Perform are other duties as assigned
Report any and all injuries to your supervisor or manager at the time of injury
Complete all required training in a timely manner
Adhere to Emmi Roth policies and procedures
Adhere to ERU food safety policies and all government food safety and sanitation regulations (ex. FDA, HACCP, GMP, OSHA, Lock Out Tag Out)
Uphold all rules pertaining to confidentiality of information regarding Emmi Roth product, recipes, and employee information
Qualifications Required qualifications, skills, and experience for the job; education background, certifications, relevant work experience, technical skills, and soft skills.
Technical degree in a Technical or Engineering discipline
5 years of experience in automation within the dairy or food industry
Valid Driver’s License and vehicle insurance
Experience with PLC programming (Ladder, Structured Text and Function Block utilizing Allen Bradley, Siemens, & Omron PLC’s), HMI (FactoryTalk), SCADA (Ignition, WinCC), analog controls, and various communication protocols (Ethernet IP, ProfiNET, AS-i, IO-Link, CANbus, etc.)
Experience with computer software like Microsoft Office product, ERP software like JD Edwards, drafting software like AutoCAD, database structure like MySQL, and SCADA systems like Ignition.
Ability to perform algebra, trigonometry, and calculus
Ability to convert US to metric, read a tape measure, caliper, micrometer, and use of a multi-meter
Ability to read and understand technical drawings (e.g., blueprints, electronic/mechanical schematics, equipment manuals) to repair/maintain equipment
Ability to work with automated equipment and power equipment
Ability to multi-task and prioritize under pressure
Ability to work in cross-functional teams
History of good attendance
Proven communication skills, both written and verbal
Excellent organization, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to work with minimal supervision
Moderate travel required
